1992, Tuscaloosa, Ala.
"Come A Little Bit Closer" by Jay and the Americans. Got dared by a girl. It was a full key higher than my range. Screeching bloody awful.
So bad I had to sing another song just to prove I wasn't that bad. That one was in my range and I nailed it. Been singing ever since.
And now I know all about key-changers, and girls in bars, too, .

After filling out song slips and then putting in my pocket for weeks I was leveraged into a dare (bet if you will) to sing my first karaoke song by a certain date, well that date drew nearer and nearer until a few days before that date, the bar was kind of slow, the alcohol was flowing free and I got up and sang "The Keeper Of The Stars"
I picked that song because I thought it might be the first and last song I would ever sing, so I dedicated it to my girlfriend (now wife)
I proceeded to sing 4 more songs that night and immediatly became a karaoke whore!

"Rocky Mountain High" I was working at a tavern as Entertainment Director and two local musicians (Great players both) came in and demo-ed this new fangled karaoke thing that we had been hearing about. The place went crazy. Profits were up about 400% and right then and there it became a karaoke bar. I was one of the last folks to sing that night because I thought it was an ugly thing but the boss insisted. I knew after that night that live music was pretty much dead, it was very sad. But, if you cant beat 'em....

My wife and I got up and did "These Boots Are Made For Walking" together. To the laser disk version featuring Nancy Sinatra herself in white gogo boots. (Has anyone ever seen that anywhere? I'd pay a pretty good penny for it.) This was May 2005, and I quit smoking and started singing shortly thereafter. Prior to that, I hadn't sang a thing except Christmas carols, Happy Birthday, and the national anthem.
My first solo song was that same night, "What A Wonderful World". It's amazing how those karaoke standards jump out at people. I didn't know either of those two starting songs were among the most commonly sung, I had never seen karaoke before (nor heard of it). I just picked them out of a book as ones I thought I could sing.

I don't remember the song. I do remember the pole I hid behind though.

At this Moment-Billy Vera & the Beaters. The Pioneer LaserDisc Version (which is the best version ever made in my opinion); and that was about 20 years ago!

I remember YEARS AGO walking on the boardwalk in NJ and coming upon a booth that would RECORD a song for you on cassette tape.
First song I sang "karaoke" was LADY by Kenny Rogers
The first song I ever sang live was with a HS Band back in 1975 - DREAMS by the Allman Brothers !!!!

My first song was "Yesterday once more" by the Carpenters, we had a karaoke afternoon at primary school as a leaving party for the older kids. I was 10 at the time and I won, alongside four other kids who all did duets. I was hooked from that moment on, and one teacher said I should do it for living when I was older.
Looking back, I think he meant sing for a living, but ho hum.

As most of the rest of the world of karaoke singers, I was out at a bar with one my good friends and they where doing 'horrible' karaoke, we had plenty to drink and thought...hey, what the heck. He didn't know too many songs, so I let him pick...whaaaater he wanted. We got up and killed, Enter Sandman by Metallica. Which most of the song, he just stood there looking at me...amazed that I knew 'every' word...and belted it out! The performance was good, but the singing...not so much. It did go over well, we got kicked out of the bar soon after that for trying to stop a fight, with someone we didn't even know. Ahhhhhhh, those were the days...been hooked ever since!

I'm guessing it was around 1995, a place in Addison, Illinois. To get me up there it only took someone to say, "I'll buy ya a Stoli on the rocks". I sang Keep Your Hands to Yourself, by Georgia Satelites. After that the rest of our group started trying it one by one. The guys loved my song because the song was a video, and was placed on a beach setting. Bikinis And obviously since I'm on this site, I've been hooked since then.
Come to think of it, I haven't seen a song with a video in a long while. Do they still exist for the sytems KJ's run now-a-days?

I was terrified the first time I did karaoke, despite being convinced my whole life up to then that I could (kind of) carry a tune. I did "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and some of the girls in my group of friends helped me out by screaming like deranged groupies. It went great and from then on I was hooked!

It was 1994 I was in a little bar near Superstition Moutain in Arizona (on vacation). Got really drunk and my nephew dared me to sing. I didn't know any songs and hadn't sang since I got kicked out of choir in high scool back in the 80's.
I sang Drum roll please..... Like a Virgin - Madonna!!! I was awful!! I didn't sing again for about 2 years then it was at a little oriental restaurant in Seattle somewhere and all the words were in Japanese (I think) That time I sang Olivia Newton-John - I honestly Love you, because I knew most of the words... .. wasn't so bad that time....
needless to say, having sang now for many years and even Kj'd for a while. I don't have to have liquid courage anymore to sing...
