RAID-5 is the most commonly used design for what you describe. RAID 3 & 4 are seldom used as they have very poor performance due to the dedicated parity drive. Three hard drives in a Raid-5 design stripe the parity data across all the drives allowing you to recover a failed drive from the other two as well as very fast access times. In my 15 years of IT I have never seen a Raid-3 or 4 array.

FYI: The RAID number (1,2,3,5,10, etc) has nothing to do with the number of drives.

RAID is used for 24/7 fault tolerance in situations where you cannot have ANY downtime due to a drive failure. If you are running a 24/7 Karaoke operation, I would highly recommend it. Otherwise, just make a backup!

I would never use the word "silly" or "stupid" in describing someone else's idea or way of doing things.

I would never use a RAID however. For a total of 640 bucks, I have 2 laptops plus a 160 gb external hard drive and a back up 1T external hardrive. All told it takes up very little room and gives me confidence in a case of an equipment failure at a show.

I also see NO point in spending 1000 bucks on the newest and greatest laptop or notebook out there. Overkill. Rather take the difference in money and spend it on my sound.

If you REALLY want to go the rack mount route with raid, I have several used true rack servers available if you really want to go that route. They have no OS currently. I have a couple of 1us and a larger one, I think it is 4u.

They have 1 Xeon processor, the larger one has dual Xeons. All have 36.4gb Ultra SCSI drives.

ML370 G3 HP Compaq Proliant 2x 3.2ghz P4 Xeons, 2GB RAM, 3x 36.4 drives, HP Surestore 40x6 DAT drive = $249, $75 ship

DL380 G3 HP Compaq Proliant 1x 3.1ghz P4 Xeon, 2GB RAM,. 3x 36.4 drives = $175, $50 ship

DL360 G3 HP Compaq Prolian 1 x 1ghz P4, 1GB Ram, 2x 36.4 drives = $75, $50 ship.

Send me a private message if interested, these are listed elsewhere and will sell quickly.
