I agree with Bruce on this one. If There were lower than 8 people singing and it was the end of the night I would NEVER dream of choosing an 81/2 minute song to sing.

End of the night rotation always goes the same for me.
Landlord says wind it up now, take last requests.
There could be 2-20 in already.
I may get 3 or 4 more requests and then the Landlords family start.
Just one slip with 10 - 15 requests on it.
A 13 year old can keep me there till 2:45 am.
Soon I will play cowboys & Indians with her.
Then the Landlady's "Last one". She never could count.
I don't do hourly rate.
I stay to the death.
Landlord see's I go the extra mile.
Well, when he is sober he does.
Any way I have always felt I get paid fairly.
The bonus is it is a really warm and friendly pub.
Don't need security.
I would rather be wishing I was finished by 2:30 than
wishing I was not at home that night.

I've been known to sing Jesus Of Suburbia late in the night if it's dead and everyone is all sung out.

I also dislike the fact that my hosts on my 2nd rig sing too many songs overall and then duet Bohemian Rhapsody in the last 20 minutes of a Saturday night, then again, they may not have that many requests then either.

I do get some of my old regulars saying they preferred me hosting, I also get some of the new regulars wondering who the heck I am when I drop in towards the end of the night. I don't steal a late song, but if my rotation scheme allows me to sing, I will, but a normal length one!

Common sense and not having too big an ego will let you know whether it's appropriate or not.

I sang torward the end last night and had a request to do so, albeit not an eight minute song. I also stayed another 30 minutes and let everyone that was left get another song in.

You being requested to sing is completely different and totally fine. I don't mind if the KJ's sing in the rounds when it's not crowded, but the last rotation does irk me a bit. I mean it's a couple that was doin this KJing, and they'd be like 3 & 4 from last, leaving 2 people left. I think that's kinda wrong. But definitely not 8 minute songs, they never do that. I hate when they throw in a 6 minute song for me if I let them have the keys that night. They do take themselves out alot and or only do a duet when it picks up. So they're good, it's just those few times.
