A few more comments on this thread:

Well, I guess you've figured out my answer to what newer songs (well, _song_) _I've_ been singing:

"Alejandro". Every chance I get. :D

I just ordered a Lady Gaga CD from (I think) Pocket Songs, so (as I said on another website) instead of driving kj's batty asking 'em if they have the song, I can now drive 'em batty asking them if they will let ppl bring in their own CD's. :D That's about it for newer songs...at least for now. I usually do older songs, and very often they are ones that I have never heard anyone else sing for karaoke. I love it when I do a song and someone says they haven't heard it in a long time. So, for me, newer/current songs are the exception rather than the rule--"Alejandro" is really the only newer/current song that I've been busting my butt trying to find. Other than that--lemme see what's in the book. :D

As for kids' songs--I LOVE kids' songs!!! It was so funny--the other day when I was getting ready for work, I was singing "Down at the station early in the morning, see the little pufferbellies all in a row..." There's also one that I was watching clips of people singing on YouTube that's called "A Boy and a Girl in a Little Canoe" or "Canoe Song". That is so cute! It would be a real kick to sing that for karaoke, even for adults. Anyone else know the song I mean? It's the one that ends "the moon shining all around." That was the only line I could remember, so I googled it and found all these Youtube clips.

Many good kj's will allow you to bring in a personal disc - especially if it is an original. The ones that do not allow are typically the computer shows that either do not have a way to do so or just plain do not want to - but be carfeul of the ones that do because you might see the disc you paid for in their books/or available to all the next week. Disc based shows that do not from what i've gathered from some posts is because they simply think it's rude (LOL) that the customer has something the kj does not and simply will not play them - never understood this stance but so be it.

Well, then they need to buy more stuff! Sheesh!  New AND old stuff! The more songs, the better! Of course, I don't know how feasible that really is, since I'm not a kj (but I admire the work you kj's do--I couldn't do it!).

I operate mostly on the request it buy it methodology. I don't play outside discs because I don't want to appear like I'm copying their disc and don't want to carry an outside player for that purpose but I do tell them that I could probably have it for them next week and jot the name of the song down so I can search for it and buy it for them.

I don't play customer discs, but for none of those reasons. I replaced the cd-rom drive in my show Thinkpad with a second hard drive and own no old-school CD+G player. Honestly, I only get asked to play a customer disc about 3-4 times a year.

I usually have new songs available for singers before they actually get around to purchasing for themselves. I do order by request now. I also use Hoster so I can, after carefully explaining to those who bring in personal CDGs, that each and every time they want to sing off their discs they'll have to bring them in because I can't 'keep' a song of theirs that I've loaded and they've sung. Nobody has every questioned my ethics for sure. One of the nicest things about Hoster as far as I'm concerned. No arguments when someone can't sing their favorite version of a song I may have (often a crappy version so why would I carry it?). Singers are strange sometimes.

Yeah if I didn't have a way to do so, i'd have alot of unhappy singers. I get anywhere from 4-10 discs handed to me throughout the night - even have disc holders both for jewel cases & just a single disc so it will not be scratched. If the song they are singing is something of interest or I think it might have feasability to purchase, i'll try to pick it up, otherwise I will always have a separate player for the customers - someone just last night asked if he could still bring in laserdisc karaoke - I told him sure, but if it's the Pioneer library I most likely already have it.

Just remembered someone was real happy that we had "Smile" by Uncle Kracker and sang it practially right out of the mail box.

We also order by request and will play singer's discs. For the past 3 weeks, we have even had 3 different people want to sing along with regular CDs and we did it. On one, the lady had a CD of original songs her band had done and we were able to take most of the vocal off with the Multi-plex button on the old Pioneer. The other two guys wanted the vocals kept on and we thought it would not be such a good thing but they were right with the original singer and one was even harmonizing with him and it actually was well-received. In fact he got cheers. We have also had people write their own songs and make their own backing tracks and bring them in. It adds something different and creative and it is always well received.

Hey Lonnie, I know you are using the Hoster. Any reason why you don't use the Hoster's to temporarily rip the songs from customer disc and use the player? Just curious.

Hey Lonnie, I know you are using the Hoster. Any reason why you don't use the Hoster's to temporarily rip the songs from customer disc and use the player? Just curious.

Simply for the fact that my computer is built into a cabinet so I can't get easy access to it, and would rather not have an external drive - plus my Pioneer players are nearly bulletproof & can read even the scratchiest discs 9 out of 10 times in which sometimes the computer drives can't even load them. Plus on that rare occasion that a disc is computer protected (had some early Chartbuster customs that Hoster would not load, plus MediaCloq discs, see those every once in a blue moon), i'd just prefer to be able to play everything instead of chancing I might not be able to play someones. Just my preference.

Thank you Karaoke Kurrents, I wish you'd make more frequent releases. Zac Brown, co singing Black Eyed Peas, Jamie Foxx, 3oh3, dierks bentley, darius rucker. And I've also been learning Colt Ford songs, Travie McCoy, BoB

And if the falsetto is good for Muse I also suggest Undisclosed Desires, Resistance, I Belong To You and for the older catalog, Time is Running Out, Hysteria, Stockholm Syndrome, and Starlight.

Me also. I've never worked at a venue where there weren't loyal enthusiasts that bought their own discs/ preferred versions of songs pretty much every night.

By having a seperate cdg/dvd player, i have about 10 regulars that are committed to my show since the ones down the street don't/won't play discs.

Business 101. Offer More goods or services than the next guy and you'll increase your bottom line dramatically.

I use my player to introduce promotional Spots at our venues, show pictures of last weeks patrons singing, and create a sort of karaoke-energy/atmosphere before the show starts.

AT the END of the night i break down my other equipment while i rock promo-only music videos that liven up the crowd more and open up the entire dance floor. This leads to more drinking after dancing and more to the end z-tape...which insures my job stability and justifies my yearly raises.

As for playing custie's discs when computer based, I just use Karafun. It's free and for the number of times I get that request (only a couple of times in 2 years), it does the trick just fine for me. Ensures I don't have to lug my CDG player around all the time for no reason.

You can do that with a simple slide show presneter on your computer too. Right now I have pictures of singers and bar patrons playing between songs on the audience screens. It's on a continuous loop so when the next singers song starts, the word screen just takes over the singer/audience screens, when the song is done, the slide show pops back up.

Like it? They now take pictures to send to me to see which ones i'm going to pick for new slideshows - so i'd say yes.
