My thoughts as well.

Fool me once, shame on you. Don't try to fool me twice, because you won't be singing anymore tonight. Just one of the reasons I never, ever move anyone up out of turn. The other reason is, why would you help them to go home early? The idea is for them to STAY and have a few more so that the till rings bigger. The bigger the ringout, the more your job security! Plus it just make the host look like someone who is playing favorites to specific individual. I used to allow it in the past, but no more. If you have to go in 5 minutes, i'll tell you basically - Hey, I can't get you up any sooner, but will leave your name in the rotation, if you are here still, no prob, if not - no harm no foul. None will get bumped up. If you want to push yourself down the list, that we can accomodate.
Been said here before, most likely many times. If someone wants to be moved up, they should ask everyone in front of them if it's ok. One person says no, the answer is no.

Why do the bars keep serving people after they are that obviously sh!t-faced drunk?
Yes, they will take a lot of money on that drunk that night, but what if the drunk gets a DUI and goes to jail for about a year? That's a lot of lost business.
What about all the people that don't want to be around people who get so stinking drunk that they become totally obnoxious? More lost business.
What about the property damage if the drunk starts tearing the bar up?
What about the potential for a lawsuit by the drunk's family if the drunk is killed in an accident? I'm to the point of thinking that it's just not even worth my while to play a dive that doesn't cut people off when they've had enough.

Most bar owners around here either don't think that far ahead or don't care. They make you take a "course" called Serving It Right in order to get a liquor license and anyone serving alcohol must take it as well. It's a joke. The "final test" is open book and no one ever follows the recommendations in it anyway, even though they're supposed to. Just another government cash grab.
Bar owners just want to sell as much liquor as they can and they really don't care what happens after they have cash in hand.

I banned one guy for repeatedly swinging the mike.
This has nothing to do with the owner,
I will ban anyone who deserves it.
Only happened once.
Also the fact that you do ban someone tells the rest to behave.

I wouldn''t have banned somebody for that...
If someone was persistently bothering me like that, over and over again, and this has happened, I tell them if they come up again I'm going to move their name down 5 spaces. If they come back, I do it again. Eventually, they learn. If they want to sing, they stop bothering me. Otherwise, they don't sing that night.
I will often signal to singers how many more they have until they're up from across the bar. Helps keep them from bugging me.
Having people ask is annoying, but part of the job.

I agree with Julie. Not a ban for life situation. I actually avoid the situation and tell them, if they have already sang, that as long as I get no new singers before your turn then you will be up around such and such a time. I tell them that I can't promise exactly when they are getting up because I'm going by what my computer is telling me. My program tells me when someone's next turn is by approximating the time by an averaged length of song.

There is a need for singers to know when they are up. If a KJ do not have a system that show the relative position of the singers within the rotation then they are bound to ask the KJ about it. Ask 3 time and they got banned?

I really dont see why the "black singer" was banned...
Of all the idiots I run into, asking when they are up hardly ranks up there for me.

I've been doing this for a lot of years.. i've yet to actually 'ban' anyone.
Usually what I do if someone annoys me that bad is to get 'em so mad they don't ever want to come back.
My favorite ASB (Annoying Singer Behavior) is the "I have to leave soon, so can I hurry up and sing my next song?"
I'm sure this request seems perfectly logical in their minds.. but I explain to them that my job is to keep them in the bar drinking as long as possible, not to get them up and singing right away so they can leave.
So if you're telling me you're planning on leaving after your next song, it's in my best interest to make you wait as long as possible.
"Sorry", I say, "Maybe next time come earlier."
I got to be honest.. if some dude kept pestering the (@$%!) out of me to go up next, and then offered me cash to sing next, i'd take his money.
"$10 buddy. Pay up, or sit down."
That's a quick way to diffuse the situation.. he pays, you get a ten spot in your tip jar. He balks at the price and he sits down. Nobody gets banned, nobody gets called names.. night rolls on.

Sometimes you run into a rotation that is so far out of whack that you are compelled to ask when your turn is up so you don't accidentally get called when you are outside, or in the practice room. For example, you know that it is your turn five singers after Miss Olivia, and Olivia sings just after Theodore, but by now it is obvious that Theo has sung, but Olivia, who has a rather puzzled expression on her face, has been skipped a few songs ago. Reailizing that the rotation has encountered a "perfect storm", should one sit still, munching on a limipid french fry morosely, or should one try and determine where indeed they lie in what is left of the tattered shambles of a rotation? What is a singer to do?
On the other hand, one can pester the KJ too much, like the show is all about me and no one else. I agree with the poster who says dock that person five turns. Of course that rule should be in the front of your book, so it applies equally to all transgressors.

Taking a bribe to get rid of a pest may work well for you in the short run, but when word gets out that you move people up for bribes, you better hope you don't have much competition in the area. The singers will get mad and leave in droves if there's another decent show where the KJ doesn't take bribes.
Drunks are just a pain in the @ss all the way around. The best thing I know is to figure 5 minutes per singer and tell them if it's going to be an hour or whatever till they sing. Then maybe say if I haven't called you by 10:30 check back with me.
Knightshow used to have a sheet to hand the singers who just had to sing next...
This is pretty close...
Lines To Move Up In Rotation
Karaoke singers, many of you have used one or more of the following lines in order to "move up in rotation." Well, we're on to you! You can't fool us. Listed are the top reasons why "I Have To Sing Next!"
1. I have to go home.
2. I can sing that song so much better.
3. I'm a friend of _________and he/she said I can sing next anytime I want.
4. My girlfriend/boyfriend is awesome. Let her/him sing next.
5. I'm leaving in 10 minutes.
6. I have to go to work in the morning (so who doesn't?)
7. It's _______'s birthday, please let them sing.
8. I have to leave for another karaoke show.
9. I own this place.
10. The owner said I could.
11. I need to sing now so I can start drinking.
12. I have finally had enough to drink and I have to sing before I get too drunk.
13. My friends dared me and if I don't sing now I never will.
14. I have to catch a plane.
15. My boss (or a talent agent) is in the audience and wants to hear me sing!
16. I'm drunk and don't know what I'm doing.
17. I spend a lot of money in this club.
18. If I don't sing next I'm going to the club down the street and taking all of my friends with me.
19. My relatives are in town visiting and they're leaving to go back home tomorrow.
20. I'll give you a tip!
21. I signed up hours ago and you haven't called me up yet.
22. I signed up last night and you never called me up to sing.
23. We're all here together and we want to sing "Love Shack."
24. I have to go to church in the morning (especially popular in the Bible Belt).
25. I'm trying to get this girl's/guy's attention and want to impress them with my singing.
26. I'm old and can't stay up any later.
So, singers, be more creative and come up with some different excuses (not that they'll work either) for we've heard all of them way too many times!
I think there was another one about their kid being sick and they had to leave to take them to the hospital or something too

Sometimes I wind up leaving early and I have more songs picked out, but I'm just too tired or whatever. Then I just let the kj know I'm leaving, so they can take me out of the rotation. I don't deliberately try to squeeze in more songs.

Hey BigJer.. that list is funny as hell!
I know i've heard most of those excuses at least a hundred times!
As for the bribe thing.. the $10 figure is kind of the 'stupid' number. Most people, even drunks, will balk at the $10 price tag and go sit down.
Kind of like when somebody asks me what i'd sell my old beat up car for.
$5,000
I don't want to sell it, but people keep asking.. so I throw out a stupid number. If some nimrod actually says, "Sold!" well, then they can take it.. but most just laugh and leave it at that.

I believe that's the general idea...
That really was a great list. I remember when he posted it ages ago. Never laughed so hard in ages!
I so miss Knightshow....

I don't take bribes at all, but $10 seems to be the normat least the way some of our not so regulars make it seem, i've actually turned down $20-$100 bills given to me. But would never even make the offer. If they offer, I tell them no - that usually will tell them I am serious & they do not ask anymore.
