I'm using Yorkville NX55P 12" mains with a Carvin LS1801NA 18" sub. I do karaoke, I do DJ, sometimes a mix. I rarely go without the sub. It's in my trailer, why not? For an extra 6 or 8 miinutes total per gig, I give the patrons the thump that is needed. My mains have better low than a lot of 15" mains I have heard but the rounded out sound of a sub gives me something the next guy might not have and now my mains don't work as hard. I've been to other shows since I completed my set up and honestly I haven't heard anything yet that comes close to it.

Having said that, I've never seen a set up with the smaller dual subs and I would be interested in hearing it. However, 2 X 38 =76 lbs. My sub is about 72 and I only have to hook up one. Also it makes set up of one main a little quicker with the pole mount.

Last thing I would add, is that I'm not doing just "karaoke". I want my sound to be an experience for my customers. I want it compared to bands and it has, and I've had band members compliment me. I know I'm where I want to be. I need nothing more to make my rig better ( in my opinion of course) other than a way to set up in 5 minutes vs. 35 to 40 minutes.

AlanB, just out of curiosity, what are your main speakers and what amp are you using to power them?

The reason I ask is because I have my mains-either a pair of EV Sx300, or a pair of EV Sx100 or a pair of EV Zx1 AND my sub or subs connected to one amplifier. Depending on what speakers and what amp you're using right now, you may have enough power to add a passive subwoofer. When you add a second 8ohm speaker to a channel, the impedance goes to 4ohms which 99% of amplifiers can handle with zero problems.

I've done this many, many times with my Peavey PV1500 amp and my ancient Radio Shack Optimus 250 amp and my Yamaha EMX512 powered mixer. I can always go louder than what the audience or venue wants. All three amps push approximately 600wpc@4ohms. I've never blown a driver, never had ANY problems.

My passive subs are the EV Sb122 model. They can run on very little power and can take up to 1600 watts peak. So there is a possibility that you don't need a powered sub depending on what amplifier you're using and how much power it puts out. To add a sub to my "regular" passive setup is VERY easy. One cable and a sub going from one of my mains, that's it. Very simple, very fast and very inexpensive.

You might be better off replacing your amp if it's not powerful enough and getting a passive sub.

If I go to powered speakers some day in the future, the whole rig will be powered, mains and sub. I've toyed with the idea, but I have really no compelling reason to go from passive to powered speakers right now.

I own a pair of the following speakers:

Yamaha S115V 15"
Yamaha S112V 12"
Behringer B215XL 15"

And I have these amps:

QSC GX5
Behringer EP2500

I don't use the Behringer EP2500 anymore because of the weight. It's very heavy, that's why I went with the QSC GX5. It will power any of my mains just fine.

That Gx5 will power a main and a less power hungry sub on one channel or both mains on one channel and a sub on the other channel. If you find a sub with a built in filter like my Sb122, you don't even need a crossover. My subs come from the factory wit a built in 150hx filter. You can add that on to your existing setup easily. There are people here that use that same amp.

I can tell you that the GX5 amp is quite a bit more powerful than what I'm using and I run one speaker and one sub on each channel with no problems at all.

Try to find somewhere you can go and look at and listen to some subs. For weight, size and portability I would try to find a 15".

Here's a 15" sub for you that will work just fine with your amp and tops.

Ouch! Too Heavy. This speaker is almost 80lbs. The 15" Behringer even with it's built in amp is only 66 lbs.

You're good at finding specifications. I looked it up but couldn't find the weight. For the money the Behringers are a good deal and especially compared to just about any other similar product out there.

Personally I would consider the Samson since I'm running a passive rig and most likely will get a more powerful amp rather than going powered. I've been thinking about the Behringer EPX3000 for about a year. When I read about the new $399 7-8 pound Peavey IPR3000 amp coming out I decided to wait for it, but at this point it doesn't look like they're ever going to come out with it. Most likely I'll order the Behringer EPX 3000 before the end of the year. With that amp my subs will THUMP. I am seriously underpowering my subs right now and they work just fine. I'll sell my old Peavey PV1500 amp on craig's list for $150 and that will pay for 40% of the new amp.

All the hype about subs got me salivating over using a sub and so about a year and a half ago I got my little pair of portable subs. While it does enhance the overall sound, I think I could have done just fine and been just as happy with just my original pair of EV Sx100+ speakers or a pair of 15" speakers. It's all about the crowd you serve and the type of music being played.
