LOL, the set I received, one already broke with a relatively minor drop - snapped the section where the grill screws on. Must have hit just right or something, it wasn't more than a 3' max fall.

As far as the OP, the i'm not big on powered mixers but if I had to choose i'd probably opt for the Yamaha or Mackie mentioned later.

I am looking at replacing my home theatre equipment at the back room which I am currently attaching my dj equipment to. I will be adding Karaoke to this setup as well with the primary source being DVD Karaoke.

I am looking at the Yamaha 512SC as the Mackies are a bit expensive here as they aren't as common. $950 vs $1300 AUD

There is shop near me which have a special for the 512SC and 2 X A15 speakers. Do you recommend buying this speaker for my setup or look to buy somethign else that can cater for both dance music and karaoke?

that setup would be more than adequate for what you are trying to do. the BR speakers sound and a great bass response (hence the BR in the name)

Thank you for your advice. I might buy this one next week.

I am unsure what you referring to as BR Speakers. I never used these type of speakers before. Would they sound better then the home theatre style Yamaha speakers?

the speakers in the package are Yamaha BR15. they are pa speakers. and yes, they will sound better and last. home theater speakers aren't made to handle live sound and you would most likely end up blowing them. use home theater speakers for home theater applications, and PA speakers for PA applications.

Actually the speakers in that linked package are the Yamaha A-15. Not the BR15.

Thank you Paradigm.

The club series speakers you are talking about might be these.
http://www.billyhydemusic.com.au/shop/v ... aker-r115/
They also have these:
http://www.billyhydemusic.com.au/shop/v ... ies-c115v/

From the description, these seem to be more geared towards club music then the A15 which in the description says:
Quote:
From solo entertainers to touring bands, jazz clubs to houses of worship, for any situation that needs a quality sound system, Yamaha's A Series speakers are worth a good look and listen

R115
Quote:
Yamaha's Club Series loudspeakers have long been a popular choice among audio professionals and musicians for offering quality components, excellent performance, and durability at an affordable price. In that same tradition, the R-Series offers powerful sound, practical function, features, and audio quality at a price that is even harder to beat.

C115V
Quote:
Gigging bands, mobile DJs and houses of worship have helped make the first four generations of Yamaha Club Series Speakers incredibly popular. The refinements of generation V continue this success story: larger enclosures for improved low-frequency performance, improved drivers for higher power handling, redesigned crossovers, stronger grilles, and dual Speakon® and ¼" connectors

If the club series will sound a lot different for dance music, I might have to save a bit longer to get these.

One question, if one person buys a $3,000 set of Yamaha 5 piece home theatre speakers. Another buys these two Club Series speakers and we use it at home for Karaoke in a medium size 5m x 5m room. Which one would sound better at the same volume? The reason I am asking is my brother in law is also looking to buy a home system predominantly for karaoke. Instead of investing $5,000 amp and speakers. Is its better to buy the Yamaha EMX512SC and a set of the Yamaha Club series speakers.

Hey Quacka

Gday from Sydney. It will definitely work, however I would recommend a smaller 12" as opposed to the 15" woofers for your application. They tend to be much nicer on the vocal, and you did state that it was preliminary for Karaoke.

You should have more than enough power for a 5 m x 5m room in the package you are looking at.

My only gripe with putting PA speakers in the house is that they tend to be a lot bigger than HT speakers and nowhere near as pretty. Yamaha cabs are generally huge in my opinion.

I knew a few audiophiles that would roll in their graves if they knew someone was even thinking of using PA speakers for their Home System. :)

Cheers

they each have their place. my suggestion would be to get the setup appropriate for the MAIN usage. if karaoke is the primare use of amplification in that room, go for the live setup. if it is tv and movies, go that way, but be careful running live music through them. for tv and movies, a pa will not sound as nice and defined as a dedicated home theater setup.

We definitely will not run TV and Movies through these speakers. It will be just Karaoke and DVD music.

I will probably try to buy mysetup first and test this out before we commit to the other setup in the lounge room. I will be using it only for DJ/Karaoke so this might be more ideal for me. Since this system would be used 98% of the time in a room that is only about 10 metres by 5 metres. It might crack the wall if I turn it too loud I guess.

My setup so far:

1 x Yamaha EMX 512SC
2 X Yamaha A15 Speakers
1 x AKG WMS 40 PRO Dual Systems
1 X SM58 Microphone

It costs a bit more then $2000AUD, bit over my budget but I hope it is worth it :)

Gday vtrod. I seemed to have missed your post before.

For my application it would be most probably be more DJ then Karaoke but for my brother in law setup, I guess it would be a bit different since it would be just karaoke for him.

I might look for something a bit nicer looking for him since he will be putting this setup in the loungr room whilst I will putting this in the back room with my other toys. Can you recommend any nice looking pa speakers?

Thanks Lonman for your confirmation :)

I have a few people telling me to get the Shure SM58 or Sennheiser wireless. For over twice the price for two mics, I am unsure if it would make that much of a difference to justify the price difference.

I agree a 12" is usually better for vocals, but you do lose bass response as well - but depending on the size of the room, it may not be an issue and you could always couple it with a sub. 15" are still good with vocals and give much better bass response usually

For nicer looking PA speakers look into House Of Worship/Church speakers. Some companies like Peavey that I know of do make decent PA speakers that are built in nice looking cabinets. If you dig you can probably even find some nice wood finish PA cabinets.

For your home use I think the AKG's will be more than adequate. The Shures would be a little crisper, less handling noise, fuller sound, but with this being your first mic, it's a great entry level set and you can decide if you want/need to change out later.

Hi Quacka

Some current pricing that is available at one of the cheaper retailers I use:

Yamaha EMX 512 SC $649 (inc GST)
Yamaha A15 x 2 $898 (inc GST)
SM58 $159 (inc GST)

A further package discount applies (~$100)

Let me know if you need their number.

Cheers

Vic in Sydney

Edit: If you are looking for a decent sounding, okay quality pair of dual cordlesses at a low price $300 - there is a KARSECT true diversity, selectable frequency dual. Only used it for a few weeks, but it seemed pretty solid and didn't sound too bad to me. The Shure PG58 duals are over $800 :S - If all fails there is always SHUPU or SHURU from the Parklea Markets :)

Thanks Lonman, I will see if I can find some deacent looking Peaveys for my brother in law.

Vtrod, that price for the 512SC is very cheap. Are they happen to be in Melbourne? If I have to pay a few hundred for delivery it would be basically the same price.

Billyhide actually have the SM58 and A15 a bit cheaper then what you mention.

Where can I get the PG58 dual for around $800? Everywhere I checked they around 1k. I am thinking if it costs $200 more and the quality of these are like the SM58. It might be a worth while investment.

The karsect does look good from ebay :) I might go for this if I am low for cash.

why buy the dual? you can get a pg58 wireless for $300.00. just buy 2 and only spend $600.00 instead of $800.00 for one dual.

Are you sure you're not confusing US and Australian dollars?

I would buy it from the US if the powerpack supports 220V :) Especially now the USD-AUD is nearly one to one, I can save a fair bit.
