It would only replace a hard drive.
And will.

Once the manufacture gets to high enough volume the cost will fall to not much more than the cost of materials. Sand, plastic and a bit of metal.
Blank rewritable CDs used to cost nearly $10 each when they first came out and now cost about 15-25 cents each. Same price decline occured with floppy disks before they disappeared. If people start using them they will fall to far less than $1 for a 5-10gb.

And impurities.
Can't make a semi conductor without that.

The mini-SD is already pretty cheap. I think you can get an 8G for less than $10.
That being said, it is unlikely to get as cheap as a DVD. Too many different parts, too many steps in the manufacture, too much testing necessary.
Won't matter anyway, when it comes to movies. Streaming is going to be king. Cost of parts? Zero.

I saw these at Ace and I was interested, but had a few questions.
Do any of you know if the files are individually zipped or all uncompressed? It would save time ripping, but I like to keep my files all zipped to save space. If I have to zip all the individual files, it may take awhile after all.
Also do you know the encoding bit rate? I am making all my new rips at 320kb.

Also--what is the new "Register Your Product" link for on the CB site? I tried following it through to see but it just went round in circles.
Thank you.
Who is Mr. Grimes ?

Thanks Lon, I guess I should have known that, since CB is only 30 minutes from the house.

Ok, I recieved one of these (2010 pop 50, #5139) yesterday and I can give some details.
1) The SD card is about 512mb total. It has 2 directories, a README directory and a SONGS directory.
The README directory includes warranty info and advertisements in PDF format. It also points you to Chartbuster where you can download a free MP3+G player if you need to.
2) The songs are all encoded at 256kbps. The MP3 and CDG files are just dropped together in one big directory, nothing is zipped.
It saves time from ripping, but (personally), I would have preferred 320kbps encoding and zipped files with each MP3 and CDG packaged together, but I realize that some MP3+G players cannot play zips, so they probably left them uncompressed to avoid redundant calls to tech support.
Overall, I am pleased and I am sure I will purchase more. They have a wide selection on SD format already.
Of note - I received my SD card on 10/4/10, and the files were encoded on 9/15/10. So I suppose they have only had this format out for a couple weeks now.

Did the set come with anything about home use/commercial use or registering the product?

No Grimes, in these hard times
Kjs accused of copyright crimes,
To help us to distinquish, lemons from limes,
And how to spend our nickles and dimes,
Oh sh!t, I've run out of rhymes
My ChartButters would have answered this question, but this guy is a no show....I'm not surprised....

I don't think he likes us, anymore.
Hey--you don't need to keep singing those same annoying songs over and over--you can write your own! (At this point in the economy, you could sing those songs all you wanted at our show as long as you bought mixed drinks over draft. Actually, draft is fine, too.)

My buddy owns a bar, and says he makes a big profit on draft......I prefer MGD in the bottle..... ......where are you located, Liz?

Hell, Nevada. We are in exhile because we got priced out of housing in our homeland of California. Now we have housing but no jobs. Everyone is hurting, the bars are hurting, karaoke shows are hurting. Our venue is in the third most economically depressed county in the nation and was holding on but starting to feel the heat these past few months. We love anything anyone sings right about now. Funny how one's perspective changes...........

I like you all just fine, but I've been extremely busy of late. Many apologies for not responding immediately.
We're developing the SD Card line and distributing it through retailers, though we have cut no exclusive deals. I think you'll find they are a good value. You should soon see quite a few of our larger collections available on this format.
All of our physical product is available for show use. However, I must point out that we cannot confer a license that is not ours to give, as I've pointed out elsewhere on this site.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.
Was also wondering about the "Register Your Product" link on your site. Last time I checked it, it just took me round and round and I wasn't sure if it was for warranties or discs or ????

The registration process should be for warranty purposes. I will send the bug report to the IT department, and if you like you can send one as well through the link onsite.

Is the SD card not a "physical product"? How is it different than a CDG? Especially if it's not zipped.

I think you mistook my emphasis as an exception rather than an inclusion. The SD card is indeed a "physical" product, distinct from a digital download.
