On December 14th, it will be 3 years since I quit smoking. Don't miss it, wasn't hard to quit. I just told myself, never again, not even ONE and didn't leave myself an out and it really was easy! This after 30 years of smoking minus one other stunt of 3 plus years of not smoking. (Woman got me smoking again)
Regardless, considering what actually happened was pretty lame on the behalf of the owner. C'mon MAN!

At this point, I would consider approaching the owner and taking him aside. Tell him you understand that he was upset about you dumping your ash outside -- that he was right - you were being careless and would make sure you didn't do it again, BUT if he has a problem with something you do in the future, would he mind terribly taking you aside privately and not addressing it in front of the patrons.
This way, if he's going to be an (@$%&#!), he can be one privately and won't embarrass you in front of anyone else.

Thanks Birdofsong - what you say makes sense if we were talking about a rational person.  His type of personality doesn't work that way. This incident is a normal occurrence for him.
