Sometimes its the KJ that causes the problem...(no offence to any of you KJs there)
I'm a pro-singer too, but I like to go to karaokes, just to have fun, it doesn't matter if I mess up, I can have a go at stuff I wouldn't normally do and just chill and have fun with my friends...
But one I went to, I noticed a definite bias from the KJ... I put in 3 songs to sing, sang the first, had fun, the usual stuff.
Then I sat with my friends and listened to the other singers, some good, some not so good...
I noticed that some singers were getting up again and again... while I still sat there.
At the end of the night, there were people who had sung 6 or 7 songs, while I had done one.
I went and asked the KJ why I'd only been allowed to sing once, the answer I got was "you're too good"
So much for fun for everyone!
I never went back there again

i don't blame you....
A rotation is meant to be fair, do remember it is not always the KJ skipping you, but it could be.
Duets are a big pet peeve of mine....If i see the duet thing getting out of hand i invoke the "10 singer rule" once there are 10 spots filled on the rotation board, then a duet counts for both.... it drives me nuts when you have
Jim (alone)
Jim and sally
Sally & joe
Susie and Joe
Sandy and Joe and jim and susie
Some KJ's allow it just cause they cannot control their show... and some times you have singer who do it so they can sing more, you have to control your show

I don't blame you in the slightest, but I ALSO would have asked the KJ why he continues to spin discs.
"You're getting a lot of experience at this, you're obviously too good at it."
Then I would have confronted the owner/manager of the joint. I would have given them my complaint, and said WHY I wouldn't be coming back.
It's KJs like that that give us a bad name.
I had a musician come in last night... he's trying to get a gig with the bar I work at, working on other nights... I not only let him sing in rotation just as if he were any other guy, I told him that if there was anything I could do to help, to not hesitate to ask.
MY JOB is to help the BAR make money. Yes I want to make money... but NOT at the expense of the bar.
My two cents only, your mileage may vary.
Matt

[ Quote: Exactly what is an "attitude" or a "vibe?" Did someone actually SAY anything to you about showing off, or did they just not applaud as much later as they did at first? There was not as much applause the second time, and people were not paying attention during the song. At the end of the song, people still appeared indifferent. But if a super drunk out-of-tune person sang something, they got rounds of applause. I guess it's because I was new.[/quote]
Then I wouldn't read too much into it. I tend to agree with earlier posts that the applause level deteriorates when the alcohol level increases. The other singers probably had a lot of friends there.
Part of it may also be the KJ's responsibility. If the KJ fails to keep the audience involved by reminding that karaoke is a live show, nonsinging patrons may start to think of the show as a glorified DJ act.

You were right to do so. This is a lousy KJ and doesn't deserve your patronage.

I disagree slightly. The KJ is the one cueing the songs. Therefore, it is ALWAYS the KJ who is doing the skipping. I will admit, though, that sometimes the KJ can be overridden and ordered to skip the rotation by a higher power (i.e., the bar owner).
I also ALWAYS count a duet as one person's turn. An incident last night is a good example. I have a regular who bills hereself as Anna. Last night a semi-regular, who goes by Lefty, turns in a duet for himself and someone called Deanna. It so happened that that song would be the last in a rotation.
When I called them up for the song, Anna gets up and comes to the stage. Turns out that Anna and Deanna are the same person. So I tell then that since they've each already sung in this rotation, the duet had to count as one of their turns in the next rotation.

Jeanne come to Augusta.
There is a bar I go to here once in a while, and they asked me about doing a show there. Well they wanted it on Thursdays and since I work and also have a show on friday I felt that I wouldn't be able to really do it. So I helped them set up their own Karaoke on Thursdays.
I am such a nice guy.
Anyway the DJ there is a total jerk, I call him a DJ wannabe cause he has NO clue what he is doing, but THINKS he is all that and a bag of chips when he is really just the dip... you get the picture. But I have always been nice to him.
Anyway... I went last week and sang my first song "Walkin In Memphis"
The DJ let me sing ONE song, and that is all I sang all night. If no one had a song in, he would "Take a break" until someone else put in a song.
I even had people come up and ask me if I was going to sing again, and I would just smile and say.. well when it is my turn I will.
I played it cool.
Finally a friend of mine went up to the DJ and asked when I was going to sing again and he said "I won't let him sing, he owns a Karaoke business and thinks he knows more than me, so he can kiss ma A--"
Now I have NEVER given out that "Vibe" to him! NO WAY!!!!
So, I went to the owner who also happens to be one of my best friends and told him what the jerk said and ---- well, my Thursdays just got booked up and the DJ wannabe is lookin for a new job.

Stevie,
I did ALOT of research... Guess what.. There many "Stars" that actually will go out and make appearances in locations and sing karaoke. It just so happens according to one Industry Source.. (I honestly do not know the exact accuracy of this..) But I believe it is true that Mary J. Blige did start out Singing Karaoke. Then entered the "Professional" music industry. As one Nashville source has put it many times.
I personally have witnessed Alan Jackson sing karaoke in public in Nashville. And nobody even approached him. He was the coolest guy in the world.
So it really does happen.

Believe me, you don't have to be a pro to sing so good that you make people jealous. Happens all the time in karaoke. Just have to remind yourself that it's partytime fun and games, not to be taken seriously.

My Monday night gig is half amateurs, half local musicians. I don't know how I did it, but I get to host the night off for a large part of the local scene. I don't encourage it, but I do allow people to plug their own bands and/or sing cuts from their own material. In fact, just yesterday I heard my first complaint about this. As it is well received, I'll continue what I'm doing. Interestingly enough, the Monday show is the only place this happens, and it hasn't spilled over to our other gigs in the year we've been doing it.

Oh, if only more people thought like you. People often ask me the secret to what I do. I tell them to just have fun. Karaoke sucks when taken too seriously.

First of all, I would say you are reading into the crowd too much in Karaoke. I think if they applaud, then that is cool, but I never expect it.
There is this show on Thursday nights where the bar becomes a "Meat Market". They are there for one thing and one thing only, and the Karaoke is just along for the ride.
There are many complaints- not about good singers, but about how they don't hear enough dance songs. So the KJ may "Reorder" the list to favor the dance songs.
IMHO - Good singers are OK, but it's the bad singers that will come in and save your butt when nobody is singing.
