I bought a used Mackie srm 350 from Guitar Center which I set up directly in front of the singer as a wedge...

http://www.mackie.com/products/srm350/

I confess to using a Peavey Feedback Ferret in the monitor signal chain as well as an added precaution. An 85 year old singer, charms one and all at my shows, but I can't quite train to hold the mic any closer than about a foot away from his mouth and well... everybody really does want to hear him -- me included.

I console myself with the certainty that the sound out of the Mackie 350 can't touch that out of my Peavey SP mains anyway - downright tinny by comparison even without the Ferret. Singers seem to like the arrangement ok, thus far...

I was never convinced that a monitor for a singer is justified but boy to my surprise I really missed it that night... a lot! Ever since the monitor goes everywhere I set up, one way or another.

Like I said earlier, there is always somewhere that you can put a monitor, because it just that important to have one.

I completely disagree. It depends on the set up.

For example, at my Applebee's gig. The customers sing standing in the aisles in front of a 42" TV screen that has my 2 mains on each side of the screen pointed directly at the singer. A floor monitor would be completely useless at that gig and in the way of people walking.

At my Thursday night gig, almost the same setup, but at that gig, the singers are all over the place. They never stand in the same place. They like to be in front of the big screen which has mains on the side of it or they are walking around the bar. Wherever they decide to walk, they can hear themselves fine thru the mains.

The only gigs I use floor monitors on are gigs where the setup in more stationary with a dedicated spot for the singer to stand in.
