I think the confusion here issues from the way that cardioid mikes work.

It's counterintuitive, but covering up the ports on the back of an SM58 or similar mike makes it more omnidirectional, rather than less. That's why they often feed back when you do it.

With all due respect... It can and will hurt the mic as explained before.

I respectfully disagree. At least a decent mic, I don't know of anyone that has had their mic be damaged due to cupping it. Cheap ones - maybe (but even then). Yes it will turn it into a feedback situation since it's changing the pickup pattern - but again if you can eq it out, even that is minimal.

Lol, that is purposely WHY I got wireless mics - so people can wander around while singing.

That raises an obvious idea--wouldn't it be pretty easy to create a slide-on collar accessory that made it hard to cup the mike, without blocking the rear ports? Maybe that's a business for someone.
