If you practice anything long enough you should get better at it. I have heard many new singers get better over time.
Eric, did the tape make you feel bad? Do you wish it would have never happened?
Do you think it was a good idea?

Side
I was appalled by how I sounded. It was only after being reassured by my wife that everyone things I am a good singer that I threw away the tape and never really gave it another thought in regard to my self-evaluation.
Because of that experience, I have given no thought to recording anyone at my shows. It is a great way, however, to get e-mail addresses if you offer to send the recording to people via e-mail (instead of handing them a disc or tape)

I recommend having yourself recorded by someone who knows what they are doing. I did that, and I didn't sound half bad. When I do it myself it isn't that great -- I don't know poo about recording.

It will really show you every little mistake you never seem to hear, while you're singing.

You are always going to be the MOST critical of yourself on the way you sound. You do NOT hear yourself the way everyone else hears you when you sing live. I watched a show the other day with Robert Plant & Alison Kraus & he said he can't stand to hear himself sing but many others consider him one of the best singers in history (although many may seem otherwise as well).
If people enjoy to listen to you, then let it be that. People tell me I sing well, I HATE my voice you can judge yourself in the SS for the song I submitted.

We are talking about singing mistakes. Like being off key during the song on certain notes. That you can not hear while you're singing. I video taped a contest once and later reveiwed the tape. I heard many things that were not heard during the contest. Lots of off key singing that wasn't noticable.
It takes a long time to hear your voice on a recording to get use to your voice. Because as you say you hear it differently.

That's true if you're talking on a recording also. I used to think I sounded too young when I heard myself talk on a tape.

Karaoke must work differently over in England. Everyone is welcome to sing, and in fact is encouraged to. People are there for the fun of it - and hell yeah, most can't sing ... but to be honest after a few scoops no one really bothers and has more fun anyhow. :)

Let me ask you a question.. You are the owner of a small store. A little old lady is helped out of a van in a wheel chair. Do you greet her at the door and hold it open for her and show her preferential treatment? I DO.. What is the difference between karaoke and any other business? All the opinions here are based upon egos or kids with no experience in PR or standard business practices. You are there to offer a service. If you can not offer that service to all with different talents then you are not providing a service which will prevail. Let your ego prevail or common sense. It is a decision which will establish your reputation or success downstream.

That's really the way it is in the U.S. too. And remember, there are a not-insubstantial number of British members on this site.
If you had a mainly-Brit karaoke forum I am guessing you would see the same sort of things there.....

The bottom line is, everyone one of us is at a different talent level with everything we do.
WE are all not musical virtuosos, we are all not rocket scientists, we are not and can not be masters of everything. Everyone has strong points and weaknesses.
Karaoke is not American Idol. There are some people that feel like it's a competition to them. You know the ones, "Oh i can sing that song better." Yeah, so what? Practice should make everyone better. That's why they call it practice. Football players never stop practicing. Singers never stop practicing. Most singers are not football players.
It's for fun. Even if you suck. Or you have to listen to someone that sucks. ![hug ](./images/smilies/emot-hug.gif)

[glow=blue]I don't care if they are great...or if they can't hit a note to save MY life...i do karaoke for anyone who comes thru that door to have a good time. Yes..we have had some that made my hot flashes seem trivial...but...WERE THEY having a good time? hell yes. I'm very lucky then because the bar i work in...five min from my home...is full of fun loving people. they clap...they whistle...they get up and dance to the bad singers. Everyone in their knows for alot of people it takes guts to get up there...and ya do know...MOST people know if they can't carry a tune...i say...SO WHAT? i'm here to give ya some fun...not to judge you...and neither is my audience...IF they come back cuz they had a good time...bless them..there's another happy customer. If someone came up to me and asked me WHY do i let them sing? i would tell them...because...they have the right to have fun too. If they are offended by that...or whatever...give them directions to another venue.
Wow...thats like saying...Only beautiful people should be allowed out in public. Its supposed to be for fun...and thats how I run my show...for Everyone.[/glow]
