It took me three months to track it down but the lounge I was working in, the mics would cut out every now and then. Come to find out it was the wireless door chime that would cut out the mics everytime the front door was opened. Put in different set of mics with different freq. this solved the problem.

They use AA batteries with a 35 HOUR battery life. (no kidding...)
The newer ones use a SINGLE AA battery and have the same life.
Been using them for 7 years and during that time, I've only had 1 go dead....
Although you wouldn't expect it, the range you can get with these are pretty outstanding... I'd rate these right up next to any SM-58 corded mic any day, they're THAT good.
One word of caution however:
AKG sells these mics with only 4 or so frequencies.... check ahead to see which frequency will NOT be messed with by a high-powered DIGITAL television station. If you're 20-30 miles away from any station, you won't have any problems.
I had to switch frequencies when I found out that the ones they sent were too close to our television stations.
I've used these, too, and they're pretty good. ++ for the AA battery!

well I have just been sent a sennheiser ew 100 to use while my cordless is being fixed so it will be interesting to see if I can appreciate the difference

Have a model number? I like my WMS40, but they don't compare with the SM58 sound-wise. They are a lot better than some of the junk wireless mics mentioned above, but they aren't SM58s.

I do a yearly birthday gig in Houston every year with the Nady quad mic system. The airport is not far away at all and every year I have the same problem. Of the four channels, only one will always work and one sometimes works. the other two are completely useless except for scaring the crap out of people  with LOUD interference noise when I forget which is the bad channel and I turn the wrong one on. Oops!  When I called nady about it, it was after owning it for a year so no more warranty and there is no way to change the freauency on any of the individual mics.  I'm wired now. But if I ever go wireless again, it will definately be UHF.

In my opinion, especially with the unanswered questions about UHF, I wouldn't abandon VHF so quickly. I, as I mentioned, was warned about interference near the airport but never actually encountered any. And I have three different sets of VHF wireless mics that have never encountered frequency conflicts!

I really haven't had too many issues with VHF either, although I don't have any VHF mics at the moment. The Denver airport is in Kansas I did have one issue with the jackass with the illegally high-powered CB radio once, but I don't remember if I was using VHF or UHF at the time.
