Has Priddis been mentioned? They range from pricey to $5.00 close out but they have clear sound and good arrangements. Probably the least MIDI-sounding "Whenever, Wherever" that I have heard and they made sure to have the drums booming in the right places.

Not mentioned, but I agree. Priddis IS a quality manufacturer. I would like to add that the SuperCore version of "Whenever, Wherever" doesn't sound midi to me at all, whereas Northstar Pop is worse than anything I've heard so far....

I'm new to the kj business, but have been a singer (in one way or another) all of my life. I don't think it's a good idea to bundle things up into neat little packages, as to what YOU, OR I think is the best manufacturer. I think you should let your SINGERS dictate which version is better than the other. That's why there are alot of singers who prefer to bring their own discs to karaoke, because (for better or worse) the version they learned on "to them" IS the best version. Nothing worse than a singer looking in your book and either, not having "their" version, or having it at the bottom of the list, showing them what you think of their choice. Just my opinion.

A vast majority of the folks who sing don't know what the manufacturers are or have the bundled disk from Vocopro that they're used to. If a singer brings a disk great, no issues. If they don't they're trusting you to give them the experience they're looking for. If that experience includes a specific song ("Amarillo by morning, Pocket Songs version please.") then I play it for them. Otherwise I pick what I think will be the best version from the options available.

I default to CB or SC when there is no specific brand specified. I list my songbooks with only one song entry and not an entry for every manufacturer, just too many songs to do that. If I get asked if I have a certain publisher, I look for it and if I have it play it for them. Part of folks coming out to sing and not just singing at home is singing songs they don't have. When they do that they trust us to give them the best experience possible.

This may be quite dependant on the actual crowd. I do have many singers who ask for specific manu versions over what I list or they bring in their own discs because they either prefer versions they are used to or it's a version that's better than what I have.

Someone who walks in with disks knows about what they have in their hands. They are going to be more knowledgeable than the folks I am talking about. In a given evening I have perhaps 5 or 6 singers who actually have manufacturers choices for their singing. I thought my numbers of people being specific were quite high until I started tracking who actually specifies/cares. It's usually under 15% of the crowd where I play. The rest just trust me to give them the best I have.

I'm torn between liking it the way I have it and having a much more knowledgeable crowd to learn from. :)

In S Fl, where karaoke doesn't appear to be as vibrant as elsewhere in the country, there are some shows where there are regulars who come week in and week out and do in fact have preferences as to the exact track that they want queued up. Shows like that, however, are the exception.

At most shows, the average person has no preference as to the manufacturer. And while at any local show there is likely to be someone who has a preference, generally speaking, people with preferences, I would guess, number less than 10% (based upon an average rotation size of 20).
