I can handle the 5 hours straight... but that's me! I also don't smoke, so there IS that!

I sure could handle a 5 hour (or 6 hour show) with no break. But I dont need to.

I sure bet you could probably have a 12 hour job with no lunch break in some jobs but not a lot of them.

If you have a 12 hour job without ANY meal breaks then it sure has to be a pretty unique job. Not to say it cant be done but why.

I don't smoke either.....

IT industry has changed over the years. With the threat of outsourcing, our boss has cut our dept to the bone.

We're busier on our end of the week, rather than the latter.

We eat at our desks while answering our phones! LOL!

Oh well, makes the day go by quicker!

I have made it a practice to sing the first song, to get things going, and the last song to say thanks and goodnight.

In between it's the singers show. I like to give all of them as much opportunity to sing as possible.

I also sing in a band so I get my fair share of singing in regularly.

Having said all of that there are nights when no singers show up for the first half hour or so. I'll sing then because no one else is.

The show I do most often is at a venue where my band plays regularly and we're popular there. We have a mixed crowd; generally about 1/3 singers and 2/3 listeners/drinkers/etc. Sometimes I get requests from people who like my band. I try to do them if I can fit them in and still give all of the singers a fair shot. If I don't think I can fit a request in I'll tell the person and tell them why and make a note to make sure we do that song, for that person, the next time the band plays there.

Once in a great while I might do a song just because I've got 6 or 7 slow ones in a row and I would like to keep everyone awake. But thats a rarity.

I don't see myself as "the show". I see myself as the facilitator. The people who come to my show regularly know that they will get to sing, and generally they will get to sing as much as they want to. They also know that they are welcome, not just tolerated, on my stage. I think that has a lot to do with the "fun" factor.

I also encourage those singers who want to, to bring their own music. That seems to be getting less common in this area. I'm getting an increasing number of regulars or seme-regulars who are coming to my show because other KJs won't let them bring their own music.

Either I'm doing something right or I've just been lucky. I'm getting good crowds at my show. There is a another KJ who does a show at the same venue about once a month who won't/can't play a singer's music, who isn't especially welcoming, and who sings in every rotation who seems to be having difficulty drawing much of a crowd.

I think I'll keep doing what I'm doing unless I start getting complaints or it doesn't seem to be working anymore.

Larry

Difference is, I would NOT work any job without being compensated by the person that hired me. Even if I LOVED what I was doing, MY time is still worth something. WOuld never work for free or expect customers to compensate for it. If I was being compensated properly, I would go without breaks if need be.

absolutely.

If I didn't enjoy my reg job so much, I'd not put up with the problems here. And my boss' boss came in yesterday to seriously thank us for the harder work he knew we were putting in.

In today's economy, especially in the banking world, trust me, I'm fine with that!

As for the karaoke, I can set up, run the show, and tear down... don't need a "break", but I do take a moment or two to drink soem pop, socialize with friends and bar staff... frankly, I'm happy doing that!
