well, people who come up to the mic to have a good time and realize they don't know the song maybe considered "goof offs" by some... but to me they are often the core to an evening of fun.

Such people have given themselves permission to have a good time and to sing regardless if: they even really know the song; they don't sing all that well; they might sound terrible to some; people might look down their noses at them;

You are absolutely correct, and that's why karaoke hosts must have patience and an open mind. Sure, I'd prefer if they knew their song, but my job is to provide fun and entertainment, not a talent show or concert.

Here's where the host actually having some musical ability pays off--we had a legally blind singer want to do a song and she asked that I sing along behind her to coach her on the words as she can't read the monitor. I was terrified as I have never been able to do a song cold. I was certain I would throw her off with my terribleness but didn't want to deny her the chance to sing. As it turned out, I kept her on track with the words and she kept me on track with the tune. And she was very gracious about it although she had someone else help her the next time....ahem... so it would seem that the ability to do a song without practicing and knowing one's catalog could be an asset to hosting skills.
