Yeah, $75 a night. Phooey. Even house hosts get that. $75 is what i charge just for setting up/tearing down. At my regular gig, I do have the convenience of storing my gear on site and I couldn't see lugging it around three nights a week. Ugh.
I will do private parties and weddings for cheap as a gift. I just did a 50th birthday party for $100 (even though we'd negotiated for $200). The night went really well, and the gal that was paying me was the birthday boy's daughter, and she's cute, and comes to my shows. So I gave her the VIP discount 'cause I could tell $200 was a bit of stretch for her.
I just did a redneck kegger last weekend for free. It was for before and after the band. Lots of my regulars and their guests and great music.
I'm doing a wedding this summer for $150. Starts at 3 (I'll probably setup around 1) and they want me to play until at least 10. That's still almost $17/hr. (beer, food, and brides maids too - not bad to get paid for a wedding gift) and they think they're getting the best deal on the planet. I live in a pretty tight area where most people know each other or know someone who does, so the word of mouth is golden. Besides, what better gift than the gift of music!
But for a bar gig ... full price!!!!
Do the lights and fog ... I've been doing them for three years and they add so much. The fog bottles warn asthma users shouldn't swim around in it, but in three years, only mild complaints. Congratulations. Make sure you remember the laws of FFC ... Fair, Firm, Consistent ... in all situations. People will appreciate it so much, but sometimes not til they sober up.
