Here i'll help you justify.
The singers don't matter, ever.
The worst the system sounds the better everyone likes it.
Karaoke crowds should only consist of too many drunks and bad singers. Take any good singers outside and shoot them. They're commies.
Hope that helps you have a successful career.

I tend to agree with Lonman here. I run shows in LA and consistently get professional singers, but on the nights heaviest with great singers, the drink receipts and tips tend lower than when John and Jane Doe hang out for some drinks and take a chance on singing a few songs. Great singers don't tend to drink a lot because they are there to perform. Regular Joes/Janes -- with "mediocre" voices -- are performing because they've got a little liquid courage. Better for business.

Most "serious" singers are usually water drinkers and spend little at the venue. You should have a mix of people.

Actually I don't think I've ever known a singer that was a water drinker (except for myself, and I smuggle it in inside my golden microphone case so I don't have to drink bar water that might not be pure H2O and could damage my vocal chords.....JUST KIDDING ). In fact one of the better singers I know drinks a lot of Yukon Jack. I do know a singer, though, that only drinks coffee, and another that only drinks juice, but most of them drink beer or some mixed drink.
But is it about the singer? Yep, you are trying to make their experience good, be they a veteran or a newbie.

You're getting confused. A rotation of 20-30 good singers is not the entire crowd. Usually the nonsingers number anywhere from 2-5 per singer making for lots of people to get drunk and listen.
I will take all the good singers and drunk listeners i can get. Why do i have to torture myself and the drunk listeners with bad singers?

That statement right there tells me that it's time for you to put down your microphone and back away from the CDGs.

And the posts concludes with the answer. No, it's not always about the singer, it's always about the KJ. At least in Angel's case.

I'm curious as to how Angel deals with a night when most of the singers are bad. I think every KJ here has probably had at least a few of those nights. Do you start telling the worst ones they aren't allowed to sing anymore? Or what?

It doesn't happen in her world! OR - it could be that what she considers GOOD singers would be just classified as an average singer to everyone else and they really aren't all that great, but are great in her ears. So even a bad singer to most other standards could be in the 'good' catagory at her show (the way she described her system before kind of demonstrated that fact as well). Different standards for different ears.

You are not comprehending my meaning.
This is the most important thing. Is the majority of your crowd singers or non singers? In 99 out of 100 cases the nonsingers rule. They are the majority.
Their ears will determine if they stay and spend money. Not the singers.
If the bad singing chases the majority of the spending crowd away, what is left? Just a bunch of bad singers having FUN. Can you keep working with just a room full of bad singers and nobody else there to spend money?
Most singers that suck don't know it or will never admit it. Do you seriously think they care about what others think? Do you think they really care about your karaoke business? Or it's reputation?
If they don't care who does that leave to care about your business? YOU. It's about the business reputation you create.
I don't want the reputation for a room full of bad singers. I'm trying to build the collective reputation of karaoke in general.
Do you like to hear people leave the bar before the show saying we gotta go the karaoke is going to start? Why do you suppose they think that? Because in most shows that's exactly what happens.
The collective reputation of all karaoke shows sucks. People are poisoned into thinking they all sound bad. Most shows are not that good with nothing but bad singers and drunks singing. There are some that are different. How many i would guess the percentage is small.
It makes my blood boil at five minutes before show time that people run for the door because they think the torture is about to begin. That very same thing should make any KJ that runs an excellent show feel the same way. How do we change the publics perception of karaoke being nothing but bad singers and drunks?
That is what i try to do with my shows. I get people that come in to be entertained from the talent and they stay and spend money. They are the majority of the crowd. How is that wrong? That's my target market. Works for me.

Most of the non-singers in my experience are there with and/or for the singers - good or bad. Again I have had great singer nights & nights where there wasn't a good singer to be heard - either way the crowds still remained because they were still having fun - which is what it is supposed to be about.

Sometimes we have those nights when the rotation is ten or less with the best singers in Northern Colorado. Those nights are a joy and fills the till. Other nights might be 10-20 average singers. I take pride in the fact that they sound better on my system than anybody else.We still get compliments for these shows from the listeners and the till does not suffer. Our format tends to run away drunks and hard core singers. They can not provide the energy and entertainment my crowd demands.

There's a few afternoon drinkers up at the bar that sometimes leave when I start, but they are replaced many times over by cars full of people arriving for karaoke.
We've covered this subject so many times over, so I'll just say that my thoughts are the same as Lonnie's.

If that's the case, it's because you are failing to convey it.
There is no problem with our comprehension skills I can assure you.

I've been around the block and there isn't much in the way of karaoke hosting and life in general that i haven't experienced.
And just how do other women communicate that i can't? Do i need a trucker mouth or something? More attitude? More in your face? More "beechy?" More bratty? More feminine?
I know women that will fight any man alive. I'm not quite that bad. But don't mess with me. I'm not 4'11" and 95 pounds. I have some well placed meat on my bones.
