BigJer, that took alot of cohones to get up for your first karaoke experience at a county fair. Especially since nobody else was singing. Don't think I would have ventured that far. You've got my respect.

LOL I wish! It was getting late in the evening and I didn't really see anybody around the immediate area when I started the singing. If I'd have known people were going to be around to listen I'd have been too scared to do it.

Even with that good experience at the fair under my belt, the first two times I went to sing karaoke in a bar setting I chickened out. The combination of alcohol and disgust with myself finally got me up on the third visit to a bar on karaoke night.

"I Love Rock N Roll" by Joan Jett.
It was pool league night and we were finished our games and ended up at the bar that ran the league. They also were the karaoke place. I got quite drunk and dared my teammate to get up. His wife had been bragging how good he was and how he used to karaoke a lot in the town they used to live in. I dared him and told him if I went up, he HAD to. So I was just drunk enough and up I went. It was great experience because I knew almost everyone in there and apparently rocked it. (I used to secretly "perform" that song in my bedroom as a teenager and knew it inside out).
Everyone was shocked because they didn't know I could sing. LOL
From then on, not only was I hooked, but so was my teammate (He'd not been karaoke-ing for several years).

My first song was Ring of Fire. By Johnny Cash.

One of my friends commented I had groupies on my first attempt. I was hooked.

I later talked to people who remembered the performance of that particular song 6 months later... (who had been strangers at the time I sang).

I ended up returning to the same bar to sing nearly every Wed for the next 4 years. Kept up an over 90% attendance at the club until they moved.

Is that Jefferson City, Tennessee? Had to ask since I'm in Knoxville.

Nice variety, no doubles. I'm wondering how many post it will take to have 2 people have thier first song be the same one.

1985, Okinawa Japan. Karaoke bar on Gate Two Street; upstairs.

Pay 50 Yen, a wired microphone is brought to my booth and plugged in to the wall behind me.

I’m given a little book with the lyrics to a number of different songs.

The music starts, and the words appear on the screen; in Kanji.

I start to read, and sing the lyrics, from the little book.

Mack the Knife

My second song was not untill seven years later in D.C.

I don't remember exactly, I started doing karaoke around 1990.

It may have been "Take Me To The River" by the Talking Heads. Was that out on Pioneer Laserdisc?

I would have preferred Foghat version!

February 2007, hotel in downtown St. Louis for Party Gras. Pretty lit up, had always wanted to try it but never had the nerve. I had bought one of those little junky all in one units and bought a set of all hit cdgs. Had practiced a few songs and on this night, since I knew no one except one of my friends that was in the bar I went for it.

Billy Joel It's Still Rock and Roll to Me. Did ok and got some applause.

My next step was to get the kahoonas to do it back home. Again lit up, I did Alice Cooper Only Women Bleed and Alice in Chains Man in the Box back to back and people clapped to my surprise and I was hooked.

No, it was Jefferson City, Missouri... I've lived in Tennessee a couple of times though -- about a year in Tullahoma and later I was stationed at NAS Memphis while in the Navy for about another year. Had some good times there, but this was my pre-karaoke days.

First one I ever did was "Suffragette City", David Bowie. Out with coworkers 7 years ago at a RIDICULOUSLY busy place where no one got to do more than 1 song per night. I went with them a few times before stopping for 5 years, but now I go 1-2 nights a week...tonight was one, in fact. :)
