I let my owners tell me how to run my show, but I will also draw the line somewhere.
One of my owners is a pervert and hits on everything that walks in the door. About once a month, he'll come to me with a slip and tell me to "get her right up". Of course, I follow those instructions. Will I let him dictate who doesn't sing? As long as it is for good reason For instance, someone that has had too much to drink and can't sing a lick anyways - the bar owner might not want "that guy" up on his stage, front and center for all of his customers to see.
Other reasons I will listen include volume issues, change of genre, specific requests, etc etc etc.
A "boss" and your client wield the same power - they are just different in their tactics.
I'll work with an owner to a certain extent. I will not allow them to tell me who can and cannot sing, nor will I get someone up on demand - that is MY reputation as a host. I will work with a bar as far as if they allow swearing or certain genres, volume levels, leaving a game play before switching it over, announcements, etc. If they do not want someone to sing, THEY need to tell the person.
