I can't believe what I've been reading in this thread... it's karaoke for crying out loud, it's supposed to be light hearted and fun, but these little hitlers are spoiling it with their draconian policies. Be it KJ, bar staff or manager... who the hell are these people to dictate who should or shouldn't sing, especially over something as trite as choice of drink? Example, I go the pub on karaoke night with my friend - I order a soft drink (as I'm driving) and my friend orders a pint. Should we be treated differently because of this? Of course not. Whether I order a cheap bar snack or a £300 bottle of champagne I am a paying customer and expect to be treat with the same courtesy, I will resent any form of "two tier" grading. If I put a karaoke ticket in, I expect to get fair rotation like everybody else. (Last week I was called up to sing before I'd ordered my first drink!) Anything less is at best appalling service and should not be tolerated. The general response to the OP's comment is that KJ should stick to KJ'ing and butt out of other things that don't concern him/her. I'll go one step further to say that any manager/owner/establishment that treats its customers the the contempt described in this thread DESERVES to fail or lose business. One thing for sure no bar like that would last five minutes in my hometown!

... And the idea of charging to sing is risible. It is time to put the FUN back into karaoke!

I'm not one to say who can or can't sing because of their - lack of spending (which is the bars responsibility). But if it is not profitable for the bar, there will be no more fun! Coffee/Water/Soda alone doesn't pay for the cost of karaoke. If too many people are drinking these choices, chances are the club is not going to continue the service for you - the singer.

Fair comment Lonman. Perhaps things are different in America, but I can tell you that over here soft drinks are a rip-off, and you can easily pay more for them than alcoholic beverage! The pub I frequent holds karaoke nights twice a week, which can bring in a decent crowd, but they also have live bands every Friday and Saturday, which really gets the tills ringing, so the odd quiet night is not much of an issue. If the bars you speak of are purely karaoke then I can imagine how viability can be more challenging, but I suppose nothing can kill a business faster than poor customer service.
To address the point of singer being overlooked in the queue owing to their singing quality, anyone who does that has clearly forgotten what karaoke is about.

Chip, I never thought of it that way before. $200 pay divided by 60 songs = $3.33/song. So occasionally I get a singer that comes in and thinks he should be paid to sing and, I can tell him that he is getting paid $3.33 per song, which the bar then gives to me so he can sing free.

Good for you for walking out and taking the crowd with you! I am a water drinker. I will spend and support any place I visit when possible, buying water and drinks for friends who drink, but won't touch alcohol or soda. I have sometimes bought soda just to get a glass of water without freeloading, then not drunk it. I wish more places would sell water .While they're at it,decent snacks (apples/oranges/banannas) would be nice, too. It seems bars often mistakenly think everyone wants only the greasy, disgusting, barely edible toxic waste that generally gets sold. I often starve because so many places don't serve any healthy food at all.
