The concept is great, but the downside is always depth of song choice. You will never find a band that has several thousand songs in their rep, ready to play (and play well). The ones I have seen have at most 200-300 songs which means it is almost always the same songs being sung every night.

Not only that, usually a large number of those songs are for male tenors, who make up about 15% of men. You hear Folsom Prison Blues, Bad Bad Leroy Brown and Margaritaville every night, and rarely anything else.
Depends on the band. We have a local band "Rockaraoke" they play pretty regular locally and only have a few hundred songs from 70s classic rock to todays rock/pop & pack the place.
Here is their songlist.

Fairly typical, though with two Toby Keith and Two George Strait they have a couple more baritone numbers than you might normally find. Still a lot of stuff that is too high for most men to sing....there is a reason country is popular at karaoke. 8-)

However being a live band, they can most likely play it in a key that you are comfortable with (provided they are good enough and these guys are) AND not sound like the devil or chipmunks while doing backups!

If mckyj57 is right, and you guys are out of Altoona, shoot me a message--I'm not far from there, and would happily make the trip to one of your shows.

Yes, we are based out of Altoona, Pa.
We haven't taken the act too far from home, yet, as it's sort of still in developement. We've had ot learn a lot of things, hone our skills, and have developed our system along the way. We need an audience to do all of that. But we've hit our stride, and are quite good, if I do say so. We've become fairly adept at "catching" people, and making almost anyone sound good. Currently trying to put a press kit together.

I think we offer one of the largest and most diverse song lists of any live band karaoke. We've taken strides to diversify our selection of material, and to set ourselves apart from basically every other group of musicians. Songlist is here:

http://kband.org/songs

Here's something interesting: We broadcast our own WiFi network at our shows, so smartphone users can peruse the songlist and sign up to sing right from their phones. Being that we're still developing the app, it's not available to the public, yet.

Had a chance to check it all out, and it looks like it'll be a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure I saw some names I recognize in your attendance lists as well--I'm pretty sure there's only one Big Al/Bonnie combo in the area, so it'll be nice to see some familiar faces as well.

This is the first time I've ever actually sweated on song choice--it's nice to see you guys have some songs that I haven't seen in karaoke format before, like "American Music" by the Violent Femmes.

Thanks. It's a little something for everyone, a little something for no one at all.

For me, I admire karaoke choices over performances. Don't get me wrong, I'm constantly floored by great performances, but I'm much more impressed by unusual and interesting choices. I don't think there's ever a "bad" time for Femmes.

Yeah, you guys have that, Dead Milkmen's "Punk Rock Girl," and Sinead O'Connor's "Black Boys on Mopeds,"--lots of things you don't see on regular karaoke nights--or at least, things I don't see on regular karaoke nights.

That's the day my best friend gets back from his first tour with the navy. Hopefully he'll be back in time to make it up there with us as well.

How far in advance is appropriate for using the song queue?

You can sign up as early as you like. If you're not there when we start, our queue manager will keep your pick in the queue, just check in with him when you get there. The early sign-up feature gets de-activated before a gig. We work off of a local, non web-based network, so we download the queue info from the site and take it with us. Frankly, the feature doesn't get used all that much, but it seems to be gaining popularity.

The website is currently being redeveloped (we're not yet running version 1), and there is talk of making a phone app, so that once you create an account, it would automatically log you in when you arrive at a gig. Here's hoping. 8)

I am at the show now. I couldn't wait to get home to say how much of a good time we're having. My apologies. You are now stuck with us monthly and have to listen to our awful singing.
