Swingcat Kurt:
Not sure about Pomona, but North Hollywood has some good places...I'll PM you the website for my favourite KJ's - their gigs are Burbank/North Hollywood area...they don't play customer discs (all laptop and no CDG player) but, they actually have EVERYTHING I do, and quite a bit of swing, standards, etc - and their book is available at the website, so....you can have yourself already to go without ever gettin a book before you get there...

mic dropped at the show, it happens
beer spilled on the book, it happens
drunks singing ..it happens
Sometimes it is annoying for the drunks to hit the stage and sing...Some nights karaoke can get a bit boring...the local drunk gets up and sings "For your eyes only" in a way only he can do it ,,,and others are laughing in tears.
The biggest rule at the place I frequent is just plain ole respect for one another and still sometimes one might get mouthy with the kj. The KJ is a much bigger person as they shake it off and move on.
The regulars who frequent if they see something not right going on, trust me the person doing wrong will definitely get the message.

Ive found the single most effective way to regulate over-boisterous people is simply to call them up to the booth after their song and QUIETLY give them some advice and ask them to cool it. That 95% of the time will do it. Be respectlful and they will. The other 5%---GOTTA GO.
Same thing wehn they scream and sing terrible--call them aside and give them some pointers and HELP them to IMPROVE thier singing. They usually really take to that---cause even drunk--they usually want to TRY to do thier best.

Ive seen less problems at my show because I have control on what goes on and if the singer gets out of line their ban..I dont have time for people being stupid and there is no need for it..yes Im in a bar and yes people get drunk but that does not mean they can do whatever in the hell they want to...EXAMPLE..someone get drunk then gets behind the wheel...DUI...no excuses allowed

I think its more of a bartender's job or the manager on duty to call when a person's had enough. We have a taxi service right on hand when problems go down like that. I have seen it in action.
A good thing is, if a regular drinks too much there is ALWAYS someone around to make sure you get home properly.
I would not rain on someones parade if it were celebrating a birthday tipsy and having a good time. I responsible person is one who knows they are going to do that ahead of time and bring someone along for driving purposes.
Its a bar they sell alcohol things are bound to happen.

I just think the attitude stinks. Again, I say this as a Brit, and maybe we do things differently - but I thought WE were meant to be the ones who liked rules and being told what to do, and arrogant.
He seems to act like "Das Karaoke Dictator" - I go out to have fun, have a laugh, have a sing - not to be "punished" or such. If I were at his gig and saw him act this arrogantly to someone, I'd not be able to not step in and say something. And I know a great many people who would never return to a gig with such an attitude.
He has said previously that he has banned people and he didn't care. Well as the owner of an establishment I'd care. I'd care that he had alienated someone who came in to drink and spend money in my bar.
But moreover, I'd care as the KJ. I'd be worried why I had so little control, so little impact that I had to ban people.

Gemini
Based on your thoughts and actions in my opinion you represent a perfect example of what not to do as a professional karaoke KJ
I would love to have you as a competitor in my marketplace as you would be driving customers my direction on a regular basis. In fact we may begin a support group for abused Gemini regulars. It appears that they will require some de-briefing after experiencing your dictator mentality.
You are correct about one thing....it is your show as long as you have one. I would be willing to bet that in Salinas there is limited opportunities for karaoke in your small town in the first place. If you run your shows as you say you do, you better hold on to your day job.
Oh well that is your choice now isn't it

When I KJ, I have two rules.
PLEASE, don't curse on my mics (unless it's part of the lyrics)
and
PLEASE, don't ask me to jump you up in the order (even if you are the bar diva)
Other than that, I do my best to accomodate every singer in every POSSIBLE way. (Please note, I said POSSIBLE)
They are the reason I'm there, NOT the other way around.
