From what I've noticed over the yrs Sweet Caroline comes and goes. I think the patrons actually get sick of it too. Lately if I hear it it is usually someone new that comes in and sings it. It doesn't bother me as long as it isn't done every single night.

Occasionally the sailors will pull into town (we live near a navy base) and frequent our shows....remember the scene from Top Gun? Yah, you know the one, "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling," ... well, you can imagine the fun they have with that one. I don't wish it was gone from the book because they all have so much fun doing it...but lordy, I just wish any single one of them could sing....

Most people who've tried it at my shows have never done it again. The original is in the key of "G" but the version I almost always set up for a singer is on my old Supercore set and in the more realistic key of "E". Instrumentally it's a good rendition. I've got a "G" version too and will sometimes pull that one for a female singer if I know what her range is. But the women who sing this one usually have husky voices so they get the Supercore version too. Many more women sing "Old Time R&R" in my place than men. When it's sung at all.... once every 6-8 weeks on average. edit: I don't even think Bob Seger sings in in the original key anymore. I think many of Bob Seger's songs are deceptively difficult to sing. I can't imagine doing a whole concert of them like Bob did! Old Time Rock and Roll, Katmandu, and Rock and Roll Never Forgets all take alot of vocal endurance. Seger has a rocker voice, but it is pitched higher than alot of other rockers and you don't realize it until you try one of his songs. He sings with alot of energy, and if your voice starts to wear through halfway through the song, you will not last to the end! (Turn the Page must be his easiest song to sing )
I have one guy that does Like A Rock, surprisingly well. Always puts an image of wanting to buy a truck in my mind though.....

I would be surprised if they became staples, not because they're by Kid but because a majority of todays music isn't built for staying power. I do like some newer music, Stereophonics have some cool songs I've been getting into. Rudy.

Oh I know about the staying power factor. That's why I don't buy a disc the minute it hits the shelf anymore. It's not needed & 9 out of 10 times the disc get sung for about a week & then never gets touched. No sense in spending money on music that will die in a week.
I know these 2 Kid songs have been requested pretty steadily since the album hit, may not last but i've had some pretty heavy requests for them.
Have to check out the Stereophonics.

I hear you, funny thing is several songs of his ( Kid Rock ) have become as well known as any classic rock songs from years ago. Don't get me wrong, I give him his due, he's a fairly talented musician on several instruments, most of the time it's just not my cup of tea.
Copacabana was a song that was way, way over done years ago and I would have felt it should have been pulled, but I haven't heard anyone do it in a while. It was one of the first songs I felt comfortable doing. Rudy.

Hey Lonnie, thanks for posting those links to Kid's songs. Wow....I'm hoping Amen does come out for karaoke. He's sure changed, hasn't he...
I've got "All Summer Long" but the guy who begged for it has been out of town since I got it. Hopefully he'll be back soon to sing it.

vbu2c5 @ Wed Jul 02, 2008 12:28 pm wrote: Seattle, American Pie is a very hard song to sing not just because it is 7 minutes of melodic singing, but also because of the different ranges you have to hit. The timing also is tough on the spoken parts as you said. Mostly though it is very hard to sing because of the way the verses were meant to be sung, they run on and into to each other and into the chorus barely giving you time to catch your breath. Don actually wrote and sang it this way on purpose. He trained himself to be able to sing parts of the verses in a single breath by holding his breath and building up his lung power.
If done well I actually don't mind hearing it, problem is I don't think I have hardly ever heard anyone do it well. It is actually one of my favorite songs of all time. I haven't sang it in a few years but I would like to think that I do a decent rendition of it. I know one thing, it can leave you breathless trying to sing it!
Now don't get me started on the Madonna version, what a clunker IMO. Rudy.
I tried singing American Pie once a couple years ago and thought I could really nail it. It wasn't more than a minute before I realized I'd waded into a karoake swamp. I hate it when I'm singing a song badly and still have 6 minutes left to sing!
The same thing happened with Simon and Garfunkel's Sounds of Silence. I thought I knew the song much better than I really did.

Paradise By The Dashboard Lights by Meatloaf.
Always seems to be done by one guy and a group of drunk girls. I've only seen two duos nail it, ever.

Since I'm the newbie and missed the posting, I've got to stand up for my man Bob.
I don't give a rat's @$$ about the Metallica version, but Mr. Segar's version is a hot song. My Wife and I visited a friend in Waynesboro, VA and went out to karaoke. We found a hole in the wall place full of rednecks. Now I know rednecks, and I used to be one (until I got my college degree). When they saw this big 350lb blue-eyed stranger walk in, you'd have thought I was the Devil. Well, I waited my turn and sung Turn the Page. All of a sudden I became the cool guy everyone wanted to meet.
That's why I love karaoke. People normally don't "see" me because I'm fat, but when I sing, they get the "real" me.

There's not a Bob Segar tune out on karaoke that I have that I haven't tried once. I like some of the ones that aren't so well known the best...
