Okay, let's narrow this down so we're not talking apples to oranges:

then it must not have been a kiosk. It must have been a simple "lookup station." There's a difference between a kiosk and a computer station that lets you view a copy of a paper book. (Viewing an adobe PDF file of a printed/printable book on a computer is NOT a kiosk, sorry.)
No, it was a database that would send the host computer a request! Only thing I didn't have was touch screen capabilities.

So I meant what I said. A kiosc TYPE of a setup.

I only put this up because they have support forums that can really help you out if you need it. They also answer you in a timely manner if you have questions. One or two days at most (Hey! They're busy running shows too!).

Remember the time when cdg player was the norm and computer based KJ was at its infancy? This thread remind me of that time.

Got news for ya- here in the NY/NJ/CT tristate region, one of the most densly populated and upscale parts of the country, the majority still goes to the CDG player. Not only that, even the PC shows almost all carry players as well, if they have been at it more than a few months.

Joe

Why do you think that is so considering there are few CDG only shows left around me in S Fla?

The hoster/kiosk software probably won't care if the network connection is wireless or not.

There are some good reasons not to use a kiosk such as they are a disaster at an outdoor event in the day time. They're bulky. If you leave your network connection unguarded there is a chance of sabotage (although I have never heard of it happening.) In most cases the user has to be able to network two or more computers and set up the software. This is scary to some folks.

I am somewhat prejudiced in favor of karaoke kiosks because nearly as I can tell they were my idea. Sacks-O-Nuts was the first hoster to include kiosks. That this thread was even started is kind of an ego stroke (shamelessly standing at computer taking a bow, okay several bows) and since '04 I have been telling people how easy they make KJing so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Five years later with Sacks-O-Nuts off the market I don't really care (except for the ego stroke) but let me assure you all that if you have a steady gig and you can leave them set up kiosks are definitely the way to go. It's just a matter of pushing "Play."

Exactly... it doesn't care.

If you ran a kiosk then you know what I'm talking about Matt. There are no lines, no ticked off people, nobody browses for an hour, you don't need 4 of them, none of the "speculative" ideas presented here of what it "might be like." Perhaps your singers didn't go for it for some other reason, I don't have a clue. But I do know that our singers (and KJ customers) DO love them and prefer them over books.

And yes, to those who have never used one, you need to talk to mckyj57. He HAS used several of them.... in the "real world" and if you read some of his previous posts, you'll see that he has presented a very objective viewpoint. He is as unbiased as you can get.

Don't take my word for it, I'm biased..... exweedfarmer is also biased (no slight intended) because we wrote the applications which represent a chunk of time and work. Of course we'll both be biased.

Exweedfarmer is also correct, you really can't use one effectively at a daytime outdoor event like a company picnic... so I do have 5 old-timey-tree-killing-monster-paper books just for these events.

Nobody using kiosks here in Charlotte. I can say, though - that I am more likely to frequent a show with books than without. (There are a few computerized KJs that simply tell the crowd "Come up and ask for your song, I usually have it.")

Books don't need to be terribly up to date. Several times I've spotted artists in a book that piqued my interest, asked the KJ if a particulare song was in the computer, and it was. Maybe KJs that want to get rid of "books" should just keep a "booklet" of artists, at least.

For what it's worth, if a KJ here starts using a kiosk, I would not rebel. I'm in my early 40s... can remember saving data to cassettes and 300 baud modems... change is good.
