No it means exactly what i said, cheap KJs have very little equipment. That is part of the reason they can't get and keep jobs.

If i own a bar and see the KJ come in with all their equipment under their arm in one trip, i'm not too impressed. And when it sounds like a toy karaoke system i'm kicking them out.

As a bar owner i have expectations for how people will talk about the bar and their experience here. A toy karaoke system isn't going to help that image. I want something that looks and sound impressive.

I work for an owner now that wants to turn his bar into the premier karaoke spot in the area. He came looking for me. He saw me in action several times. He is very happy with the crowds i attract. He always goes up to the new singers and talks to and welcomes them. We are on our way to his goal. I'm the biggest part of that. I get my fee. When you see my show you can tell there is something different. When you hear it everything is confirmed and more.

Makes it sound like $75 is a lot of money in that area. Is the cost of living high or low? Seems like plenty of people are happy and thriving on $75 a night.

ANGEL--the word is DESPERATION.

Too many KJ's, too few gigs, cuthroat, preponderance of bogus hard drives combined with multi-rigs. Add in the HUGE number of bars with "Legal" CAVS/Harddrive systems-----Drives down the wages bar owners are willing to pay.

But this has all been explained in the previous posts in this thread.

PDX cost of living----on the higher end of things. Not like SF, LA or NY in terms or property values---but for living expenses starts to approach those places. By no means whatsoever an "Affordable" place to live.

Plus add in the current 12.2% unemployment rate(#4 in the nation) and you get the idea.

75 bucks is 2 tanks of gas here. Not much money.

Swingman I think you ment to "Add in the HUGE number of bars with "Illegal" CAVS/Harddrive systems". There have been a couple of"couples" (the husband wife sell make the transaction look more legit) selling these supposed licensed CAVS 203g systems with hard drives and giving the purchaser a letter saying the music is licensed and legal. CAVS does not put out such a letter and CAVS quit selling preloaded hard drives back in 2006. CAVS does have a download store now but the karaoke hardrives being sold with the CAVS 203g includes music CAVS never sold on preloaded hardrive. If you buy a CAVS system with a preloaded hardrive make sure you get all the original dics for the music on the hardrive with system. We currenty see bars that are now being bought and sold in our area in which the purchase price of the business include an illegal karaoke system. The same occurance is happening here where the old owner is selling music he doesn't own making him a seller of pirated music/karaoke. Not to get off the subjest but these people in Portland will lie to anyone about these hardrive systems even after the judge throws the book at them. They have lied to themselves for so long they now believe it. I think there is a "word" for it when everyone believes the same "delusion" I can't think of it right now.... but I think that is what is happening up in Portland. It almost sounds like you are starting to believe it swingman.

Flipper, it seems that in Portland, they are over-saturated with KJs, and the market won't pay more than the $75 per show out there. Even Matt (Knightshow) was only making $75 at his show (before he moved to Missouri).

Cue--YOU ARE KIDDING RIGHT??? I never asked Matt what he made---but SURELY he wasnt at 75.

No IM NOT BECOMING DELUDED. Merely being "PC" so to speak. Im FULLY aware of the CAVS thing and PARTICULARY the effect its had on going rates(If your read my post CLOSELY).

So dont YOU or ANYONE ELSE HERE for a MINUTE think Im becoming DELUDED about what goes on in respect to that situation.

And notice the QUOTATION MARKS around LEGAL---"LEGAL" inferring SO-CALLED LEGAL.

Nope.... not kidding. I remember when Matt first posted about getting back into the business (on the now defunct JOLT Forum). He mentioned that he had to beg this place (I don't remember now if it was The Queen of Hearts or if it was a show that he did before that) to let him do a show there, and $75 was all they would pay. I also remember how many of us (on JOLT) expressed our dismay (that's putting it mildly) at his willingness to work for practically nothing.

MUST have been that other place that QOH--they pretty much WORSHIPPED the ground he walked on there at QOH. SURELY they would have compensated him well for his extra efforts there! But you never know!

:withstupid: i couldnt agree more cheap kjs with bad equippment, and illigal hard drives are oversaturating the industry and driving down the prices for proffesional kjs. Nothing infuriates me more than laptop kjs and their 200 dollar craigslist harddrive library. And even though we use jb199s i have 1400 physical original discs with another 3000 on the way i look fwd to the value of the disc coming back and all illegal kjs going out of business.

There are twelve companies here and half of them in the entertainment industry. We do share the same wifi in this complex. Could be a co-worker or from another company? But now I know this I will keep an eye open for her. Thank you for sharing.
