I've been around the block and there isn't much in the way of karaoke hosting and life in general that i haven't experienced.

And just how do other women communicate that i can't? Do i need a trucker mouth or something? More attitude? More in your face? More "beechy?" More bratty? More feminine?

I know women that will fight any man alive. I'm not quite that bad. But don't mess with me. I'm not 4'11" and 95 pounds. I have some well placed meat on my bones.

Why was that last comment necessary?

You are not comprehending my meaning.

This is the most important thing. Is the majority of your crowd singers or non singers? In 99 out of 100 cases the nonsingers rule. They are the majority.

Their ears will determine if they stay and spend money. Not the singers.

If the bad singing chases the majority of the spending crowd away, what is left? Just a bunch of bad singers having FUN. Can you keep working with just a room full of bad singers and nobody else there to spend money?

Most singers that suck don't know it or will never admit it. Do you seriously think they care about what others think? Do you think they really care about your karaoke business? Or it's reputation?

If they don't care who does that leave to care about your business? YOU. It's about the business reputation you create.

I don't want the reputation for a room full of bad singers. I'm trying to build the collective reputation of karaoke in general.

Do you like to hear people leave the bar before the show saying we gotta go the karaoke is going to start? Why do you suppose they think that? Because in most shows that's exactly what happens.

The collective reputation of all karaoke shows sucks. People are poisoned into thinking they all sound bad. Most shows are not that good with nothing but bad singers and drunks singing. There are some that are different. How many i would guess the percentage is small.

It makes my blood boil at five minutes before show time that people run for the door because they think the torture is about to begin. That very same thing should make any KJ that runs an excellent show feel the same way. How do we change the publics perception of karaoke being nothing but bad singers and drunks?

That is what i try to do with my shows. I get people that come in to be entertained from the talent and they stay and spend money. They are the majority of the crowd. How is that wrong? That's my target market. Works for me.

Oh, I wish you could make it to one of my shows. I have almost all singers. The bar is usually relatively empty ( maybe 3-5 non-singers sitting at the bar) until karaoke starts. I have a mix of all talents. More good singers than bad usually. I haven't noticed that good singers drink less or more. It's a mixed bag really. I have a couple coffee drinkers and I would put them in the average category. I have a trained opera singer that drinks like a horse. LMAO Maybe that's why we differ in opinion so much. My crowd is just different.

Maybe it's because our new member is trying to build the "collective reputation of karaoke" as passive entertainment rather than the interactive experience that's the hallmark of our shows Babs.

I may be relatively new to karaoke hosting, but in my experience there's absolutely no correlation between talented singers and a successful show. Whatever your measure - attendance, the bottom line, popularity - none! In fact the biggest nights my room has experienced have been the sloppiest.

The good singer may not drink to get wasted. Is that a prerequisit for your shows? Does everyone need to get that drunk to say they had a good time?

2-5 listeners for every singer would be ideal. It doesn't happen all the time lately.

This economy has put a serious crunch on the cash register total.

I had 35 singers the other night. Of that crowd there may have been 1 1/2 listeners for every singer. Still a nice crowd for that bar size. I play a room twice that big and their legal occupancy is only 180. So legally we were probably close to full. What makes things harder now is so many people are outside on the patio drinking or smoking you can't get a good idea of the actual numbers.

I don't want to play in bars where everyone or the majority are totally bombed.

I say the singer first and then all of the above!! I never leave post when a singer starts singing. I adjust until they sound great. I make sure that everyone claps for everyone and they feel good when they leave the stage. I work the room to make sure everyone is getting what they want. I have a notepad for suggestions, requested songs for next time, etc. I have a projector all my "in between" music have videos. I play videos from Johnny Cash to Lady GaGa so everyone is happy. I do "mini contests" for blow up snakes and guitars to get singers up on stage. The bottom line is make people happy so they will spend money at the bar. Keep them there all night to keep the bar owner happy!

1/2 my crowd really sucks and 1/2 are really good. Don't care as long as they are having fun. Sometimes I suck so I can't judge! :D I think (hope) I have the reputation as a fun KJ and that brings the people in. My goal is to make my bar owner $$$ and the people happy. I don't think anyone judges my show if my singers suck.....I just think that is a part of karaoke life. Been singing since 90' all over the States and have only been in one city where ALL the singers are good - NASHVILLE - rock and country. You too intimidated to get up and sing there if you suck...

Thank you.   :withstupid:

Angel does have some good input.
Just the conveyance.
She/he has a business head, a streetwise mistrust and without knowing background may be a brave soul we don't understand.

Oh bugger... My soap box just broke.

Which is the ENTIRE point! If the singers (good OR bad) are having fun and want to return, then it's a good show.

It has to be about the singer enough to make them come back so you have a show. But I had a strange observation when we vistied where we used to sing karaoke after a year's absence. For the audience it seemed to be more about the song than the singer. It could be a bad singer but a favorite song and the sudience would hoot with recognition and hit the dance floor. Then a good singer would do a great job on a newer or more obscure song and not get as good a reaction. Especially if it was a ballad.

The other thing that was a shock for me was as an audience/singer, this was the best ever karaoke show for me. We drive a 6 hour round trip to visit it a few times each year. I remember it as having good sound and really being of quality plus the hosts have a lot of creativity and know how to make each singer entertaining. Now that we have been running our own show for a year things that I never even noticed before sort of shocked me. The sound was terrible that night with the vocals blasting way over the music and much of the music was Sweet Georgia Brown and Music Maestro. But it sounded fine as far as that went. But what an exciting crowd and fun time! Hard to figure out this karaoke thing, sometimes.

That is important... it's the main thing, but if you have a series of REALLY BAD singers it can clear a bar. I WILL actively intervene in the order to separate poor singers with good ones if it's bad... i mean really bad. Normally, I will leave it go, but I feel a responsibility to the folks in the audience who aren't singers to give them a good show as well.

Understand what has just been said.

The order was changed to keep the rest of the crowd there. THE NONSINGERS. The majority of the crowd. NOT THE SINGERS.

Which one is it? Pick one.

If you see people bailing out because of the bad singers, what are you going to do to try and prevent them all from leaving? What's your big plan? How are you going to save the day?

Do you ever have to worry about the entire crowds reaction with a string of good singers? Are they heading for the door?
