Okay, so computer based people, why not have a screen shot that says, "The following music is a privately owned disc, not in my library. The singer has brought in this privately owned music and has requested that I play it for them." ...Or something like that. In fact, I do announce when someone brings in a song that I have in my book and I play it, that "So-and-so has provided their own music for the evening. You will not find this song/these songs in my library."

Yes, a pirate could run a screen like that before every song, I suppose, so it does not really let you off the hook, but in the hypothetical situation described above, if someone walks up and hands you a disc it is easier to imagine that that screen shot would be valid. Kind of a disclaimer? Would be easy to do that.

Karen, excellent!

However, if a KJ is determined not to play discs or a singer is determined to only sing along with their own discs, no amount of great ideas is going to change anyone's mind.

[And AuntbOpera, please don't take this personally, the last thing I want at my show, after singers of show tunes, is someone singing opera. At least opera is "unique" enough that it might work. Show tunes, IMHO, rarely work except for the well-know exceptions like songs from "Grease" and "Chorus Line". Believe me, I do appreciate opera and I love listening to show tunes, but not at my show!]

Gotta agree with your fine print tovmod.... nobody wants to hear a show tune. Just look at the way Susan Boyle got booed for doing one!

Apparently this is something that is venue specific - I have a young male tenor who blows everybody's socks off - he is fantastic. I sing "All I Ask Of You" with him and it brings the house down. So, I'd again say this is probably very venue dependent. My Thur/Fri show people LOVE it. (Probably a little more artsy of a crowd?)

Clearly, the reaction or lack there of is dependent upon the crowd. And once a STEADY crowd accepts someone into their midst whatever they do will be appreciated.
