It seems to me that the spotlight select series was mostly half of a spotlight disk, (8 songs) mostly to get around individual songs being no longer avalible because of copyright issues (and the spotlight disk being pulled). The net result is that each 15 song spotlight disk had 13-14 songs that went to two different spotlight select disks. To make the total up to 16 they added one or two songs to the spotlight select series, and in a lot of cases those songs can ONLY be obtained on the spotlight select disks. For the most part the spotlight select disks matched either very popular spotlight discs OR spotlight discs that were out of print.

Therefore if you bought the spotlight disk (15 songs) you would get 14 of same songs by buying the corresponding two spotlight select discs, and 2 additional songs. BUT if you bought the two spotlight select discs matching the origional out of print spotlight disc you would be missing 1 song that was on the origional spotlight disk.

Basically they would sell you the same songs 2 times to let you get one more new song.

Gotcha...I never knew that. Obviously they haven't updated their UPS mailroom software in some time.

I bet the major reason they are only releasing the 6000 songs is that those are all that they have surplus license agreements on..

Many of their initial contracts were for set numbers of songs sold. To sell more songs would require re-negotiation of contracts. Many of the artists do not wish to encourage karaoke and don't find it wort the hassle to license the songs. That is proably why many of the 18k songs that SC has made over time are no longer avalible.

As for which songs, most venues have a favored song set, and what may be a big song in one place may never or rarely get sung in another. Just because a song may not be a commercial success does not mean that it may not be the most wanted song at some shows.

Got 'em all. Full GEM series, Diamond, Emerald & Sapphire. Working on the song listings now. Found several errors while completing my authorized media shift. Sound Choice should get a refund from whoever burned these discs as there are random files (spreadsheets) scattered among the discs. Also, the file names are a mess. I have several thousand zip files (all from original discs) that I have renamed over the years to edit spelling and format errors. Seems like my $4000 didn't pay for the most basic professional level of manufacturing a set of digital files. Even their spreadsheet song listing has errors.

Otherwise... loving the quality HIGHER bit rate than CDG(CD quality) files.

Lookout down there in Florida... I sold my foundation 1&2 & bricks to a fellow down there to help pay for this.

Anybody interested in a CLEAN list of the songs available in PDF?

I'd be interested in that list. Because according to the csv file, 'clemintine' is in the set twice, which kind of defeats one of the advantages of having the GEM series if it was true.. :)

There appear to be three dups:

The First Cut Is The Deepest Rod Stewart SCG10107-03
The First Cut Is The Deepest Rod Stewart SCG10195-25
Here And Now Luther Vandross SCG10027-09
Here And Now Luther Vandross SCG10129-13
Clementine Traditional SCG10097-07
Clementine Traditional SCG10221-08

I have some listings up at:

http://duxmail.com/gem.artist.txt
http://duxmail.com/gem.disk.txt
http://duxmail.com/gem.title.txt

I have minimally changed the artist names to the Last, First variety, and numbered the disks as I think makes sense. (Some artists that are not in my library will not be "commified".)

The theory that they are using what they have left over makes no sense to me -- it looks like a pretty comprehensive set. A definite shortage of old country, though, which would make it hard to use in my area.

The only issue I had is that one of the discs was actually missing two tracks. I sent Kurt an email and they emailed them to me. I saw those random spreadsheet files too.

I will email Kurt myself for those tracks. I'm still looking for dupes as I compile my list using the csv files and Music Book Deluxe. Used the tracks last night at a show and the sound is noticeably richer.

When I finalize the list... I'll post a link to the pdf if that's permissable.

Me too. Perhaps it is the fact that, unlike a ripped CD, they are one less generation away from the original source?

actually it is because of the higher bit-rate - 320kbps as opposed to CD quality of 192kbps...
