The lead singer for The Spinners was Phillippe Wynne, not the first but the best well known voice. Most of their hits were with him at the helm.

Truth be told you should ALWAYS project when singing--this will actually help your tone and overall control.
I've really noticed how much you hold back in your recordings Steven, maybe because you're trying to blend in too much with the BGVs? I'll send you a pm/email to go more in depth.
Sorry I've missed some of the thread, my weekend was way too busy (hosted a baby shower for my youngest sister--UGH, glad it's over). I'll have some listens to your new sings when I get home from work in a bit.

WOW.. I've heard some amazingly helpful words since I posted last, and I need to REALLY think harder than usual about a few things prior to responding.. btw, welcome back Cathi..
and again, I can't think you all enough for the HONESTY !! It's feels MUCH better than ANYTHING else that could be stated to me...
OK... Thinking..
well first post.. R. Kelly was a singer in one of the VERY well known 70's bands prior to his solo career.. although his big song was "I believe I can fly" (or something like that), he was with a huge R&B group *I thought* awhile back. I thought it was the Spinners for awhile, perhaps not..
OH WAIT ! Maybe I'm thinking of the "Freddy Jackson" ? Hmmm
OK, now to what's important of course... ME... {{{{{{Kappy}}}}}}}
![Laugh at that :laughatthat:](./images/smilies/laugh2.gif) (What an egocentric #** #&@)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I sing, I hear ONLY the qualities of the vocalists I *Am trying* to sing like.. My focus is in trying to become the vocalist in the band.. It wasn't until I started singing with focus, thinking about all I've been told, *A few days back to present*
that I really started being able to hear *me* while singing, and even talking.. I NEVER knew how to listen TO ME in real, it's a VERY VERY different concept than the person who doesn't understand any dynamics regarding what's happening.. I ACTUALLY am STARTING to be able to hear ME as MY VOICE..
That being said, here's some of what I've always heard, but ALSO what I am hearing..
How I perceive my voice, and always have when I played it back, but initially less-so WHILE singing..
1) Lena, In my own perception, I have a winded softer, "somewhat God-fatherish sounding" "Oafy" quality, somewhat congested, and softer, VERY thin, no depth, but "winded hollow" quality that IS NOT conducive to singing. I have a soft voice, but not a deep, rich voice, but a winded, hollow closed up congested voice..
2) Blending in on harmonies can "pass" in choruses with some tweaking as pretty good (with addition of some balancing, and fx.. granted the cheap computer desk microphone doesn't help), it appears to be my strong point, hiding behind the harmony vocals and doing the "Chameleon" act... Reality being, In the harmony parts, I am projecting MUCH less and efforting much less than the solo parts, I AM trying to use the backing musicianship to lesser my own deficits.. Singing with harmonies to me in THIS setting is a simple thing... as Dani said, I just do it, don't think about it and continue to do as I have ALWAYS done... PRETEND to be the singer.. Nothing has changed in how I do that vs what I've EVER done.. Pitch although can stand some tweaking is generally OK for these one take songs.. Just to give an idea of what my probs are to you folks..
OK, now... believe it or not.... the last few songs I HAVE been singing out... but not "pedal to the metal" opening up, but breathing deeply and TRYING to relax and actually projecting more... It was always *MY THOUGHT* when hearing the ballad singers that they are "singing softer" to achieve the mellow "Love ballad" warmth... I DID belt out during "The Wedding Song" somewhat, I can more, but NOW we're getting into the amount of wind I need to play a horn instrument.. I NEVER EVER assumed anything beyond the microphone was what made the vocals sound full in these "Mellow" ballads...
Thanks again ALL... So if it's a matter of belting out, YES, I CAN belt out've my headier vocal range HOWEVER, I'm going to try to do that when the neighbors aren't around because believe it or not, what sounds soft *although reticent* to some of you, is in my mind LOUD singing !

Cathi, This is a lifetime of not having a singing timbre for songs I like, hating what I hear when I play my voice back, and "blending" as a NON-front musician being an instrumentalist is what I do, and have done. It's all I know, I'm not "Front performer" mind-set, I don't know how to be.
Cathi, If I'm holding back it's not physically (at least consciously) I'm afraid to emotionally allow myself to show in my singing, would that show ? Rigidity as a person ? Clamming up ? That's how I am in public.. I hide behind a shell.. When I acted, I was able to still do that.. but maybe ballad singing is different ??
I think I know what's going on.. I'm a vocal virgin <blush>

My immaturity aside. Dani is 100% correct, I never knew about ANY of this, I was just covering both nostrils with water and backsniffing and that hurt..
http://www.njc.org/disease-info/treatme ... -wash.aspx
So standard waterpik attachments can work too I see
Water Pik® Technique - Use a Water Pik® with a Sinus or Grossan Original Sinus Irrigator Tip®. Pour the saltwater into the water reservoir and set the Water Pik® at the lowest possible pressure. Insert the tip just inside your nostril and allow the fluid to run out of your mouth or other nostril. Blow your nose lightly. Repeat the procedure with the other nostril.

There ya go Mr. Kaplan, this was so much better than the previous songs! Your volume is increasing, which shows that you are becoming more confident! Very proud of you sir! :hi5:

Dayum straight it'll show up in your singing but I think you've got part of it wrong. Lemme 'splain Lucy.
I believe what you're referring to as "rigidity" is being wrongfully misconstrued (by you) as shyness and, in your own words, fear of exposing your emotions and having someone ridicule them. NOONE, and I mean nobody whatsoever, here in KS (or anywhere for that matter) who's worth a grain of salt will ridicule you for trying to better yourself or just by simply doing something you love and improving those abilities.
Are you improving? You betcha! Is there room for even more improvement? Absolutely. You are indeed on the right track and by recognizing, without having it pointed out by someone else, what the faults are is a HUGE step in the right direction.
Keep up the great work Kappy, I'm proud of ya darlin' :worship:

Yeah Cathi, that is a nice avatar, I'd love to get something like that as a fixture on a swag lamp over the piano..
It appears (and this is a VERY good thing), that it's possible I CAN sing with some practice, application of technique those of you are sharing with me, BREATHING awareness, focus on relaxation, and projection.. I really NEVER assumed that vocal chords were something other than what talented singers naturally were gifted with requiring no "opening up".. I thought a singer either had it, or they didn't.. I never knew there's technique involved in just the creation of a singers voice quality..
Thanks again.. I have some relistening to do, in order to get a concept of what I did correctly.. (This is what I was saying in the singers thread, I WISH showcase allowed this type interaction)
Going to listen, and focus...
btw.. I have a bad knee, MUST I sing standing up ? Just curious.. I have been but when I get into the song, I do something dumb to the knee ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif)

Quote: btw.. I have a bad knee, MUST I sing standing up ? Just curious.. I have been but when I get into the song, I do something dumb to the knee This is what Paula said in another thread:oneofakind864 @ October 24th 2007, 2:23 pm wrote: I think MOST of the POP music today could be sung sitting down WITH a sore throat...When I look at Jessica Simpson, britney Spears, Shakira, Fergie, Ciara, Nelly Furtado, Aaliyah, Ashanti, Gwen Stehani, Norah Jones, Diana Krall, The pussycat dolls...and I won't even get started with the "boys" or the rappers that can't sing. These people don't have talent...they have MARKETING! Sure I like some of them- especially Gwen Stephani, and Diana Krall...but would I consider them "singers" Nope! Not by a long shot! I think the question better asked Kappy is "can you sing difficult music sitting down" the answer is yes- but only with good posture to allow you to maximize your lung capacity. I wouldn't take on a Jennifer Holliday, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera or Anastacia song sitting down- EVER. I also think most beginning or amateur singers should stand up just because it makes it easier to have the correct posture without having to think about it. But IMO the answer to your question also leads to the obvious fact that "most" pop music isn't that hard. So yeah- you should be able to sing it sitting down, laying down, heck- hanging upside down. But that's a whole different thread about how good music is going to hell in a handbasket. America is being suckered into buying alot of ....um......."excrement" I would love a world where you COULDN'T sing so many of the top songs on the charts without having proper support. Good thread topic though! ![oh yeah :oh yeah:](./images/smilies/emot-woot.gif)

Don't shortchange yourself ! You've been an IMMENSE help. Thank You !
While some people might be able to help, the question is could they transcend concern of hurting my feelings ? THAT is what's important.. NOW is the time for me to get used to hearing honesty, because at this point I have all to gain, and virtuall NOTHING to lose by being told "That isn't a good selelction for you".. I can't really hear myself as I sound yet so I can be bluffed due to my desire, and if built up by dishonesty it's the absolute worst thing that can be done.. At this point I have all to gain, and NOTHING to lose by TOTAL honesty.. My fear isn't their inability to help, my fear is others inability to understand that I am not expecting to be a "singer" yet, I wish to one day become one and there are amazing resources in here that CAN help a person become a singer...I look up to singers at this point ONLY for help, there's no comparison, no competition, I've been a non-singer for so long, I'm ready and willing to wait and earn being even close to so-so singer. Fluff CAN hurt me ! It can boost my ego undeservingly, and lead me to believe I sound a way I'm currently unable to discern a difference in. I need the ears and sage of those more experienced who at one time also were in the dark.
