Fox News just had an discussion on Tipping. Throughout the country the typical pay for a server is between $2.55 - $2.65 an hour. They quoted a New York Times article that stated the average person has no idea about this "disparity" and how much wait people rely on tips. Also, they noted that one restaurant in New York has eliminated tipping; they don't allow it! The staff gets a Salary (not a wage)!
For those of you who have never been in the hospitality industry, it is hard to explain why someone who stands behind a counter at McDonald's or Starbuck's should be paid any differently than someone who stands behind a Bar. But state law(s) allow that to be the case.
And waiters, waitresses and buspeople also work on tips. One last thing, if you're waiter or waitress you're expected to "tip out" (share your tips) with the busboys/girls and the bartenders (who provided you with drinks)!
