I agree. Same mics for singers and kj seems the right thing to do, and the smart thing, as well.

Even if a better quality mic does bring out the best for a kj's voice, it won't impress the waiting singers , who will only be convinced they'd sound even better if they had a mic with special superpowers, too.

we hired a k j once to do a 4th of july get together, we asked him to start out (playing )OLDIES, he started out (singing) 5 r 6 songs himself then he switched to 30s and 40s style music, this guy was in his 30s, now i know i'm not THAT young but 30s 40s? .. after that it started to rain and as soon as it let up a little HE sang a few more as other singers were waiting to sing...2 singers got to sing before it started raining again and yep you guessed it he sang again...i just don't understand where some people are coming from sometimes..granted we didn't say 50s, 60s music as oldies..but you would think are atleast i do oldies is 50, 60s...but on that i could be wrong...maybe it just applys to me..

That kj sounds like he won't be a kj for long!

Oldies, to me, means 60's on back. I actually sing and listen to quite a lot of music from the 20s through 40s.

Same here, all my mics are the same. I use the same mic as my singers do.

Because somebody in the entertainment business knows how to position the mic for use - that's why the kj mic sounds better, and I've proven that at my shows by switching the mics. Same result, mine sounds better.

Well, at a place I used to frequent, the kj had the same mic as the two for the singers, but never usually gave it up, but once I was asked to join two singers in progress, so I grabbed the kj's mic........I sounded like I was from outer space, that mic was about 1000 degrees hotter than the two for the singers.....guess that's what you meant by mic control...

Exactly! Funny you mentioned that! Color-coded wireless Beta58 (yellow) for my singers, beta58 (red) for my own use (sanitary/health reasons). Both tweaked the same, coming out of the same line, same processor, BUT yet they always wanted to use mine because “it sounds a lot better”.

So I interchanged both mics, they have the red, I have the yellow. AND still, they want to borrow mine, again "it sounds a lot better"! Go figure!

i won't disagree with you, but at the same time a sm58 will blow a 30.00 cordless away. an a lotta times that is the care, again, i understand it seeing as i wouldn't hand drunks a 100.00 mic either..

I am actually guilty of this but for a different reason. We have an Audix OM2 with the skull pattern design that we used to put out as the "good mic" for people who didn't want to use the "fun" mic. Both are out there for the singer to choose. One night a singer who was friends with a kj from another show came in to do a bit of sabotage and started screaming obscenities into the Audix and then threw it at my co-host and stomped out. It's a really heavy ceramic mic and it landed just inches from the mixer on the first bounce. After that, it became the announcer mic just because it was too heavy to be used as a potential weapon--plus it looks cool. But I never sing on it--it has a real short cord and it is just for announcing. The "real" mic is now an AKG.

We did have one singer who loved the skull mic for his heavy metal songs and we would switch it out for him but then it went back into custody. Everyone knew we were just humoring him as part of the show and it wasn't a matter of him getting a superior mic. He just liked the skulls.

Other times if I do sing I have used a different mic from the singers because I knew I had a cold.

Not everything a host does is for malicious or ego reasons but enough of it has gone on that people will often jump to that conclusion.

i must lead a boring life i've never seen a skull mic.....i guess for reason's like that i'm glad i'm not a k j...althoo we had some pretty wild times as a band...

I kept a couple of inexpensive mics at my shows. If an abuser or someone who was crazy drunk came up, that's what they got. Handing someone like that $400.00 to drop and\or break was never fun for me. They also would get used in the group songs.

I would prefer to hand over a $100 corded SM58 (this is all I use for me and singers), if it gets dropped, it ain't going to hurt it - other than maybe a dent in the screen - this is partly why I will NOT use cordless mics, a good sounding one is usually 300-400, that is a little more than I feel comfortable with for someone to accidently drop - and it will happen. Had 3 drops last night on my singer mic. All accidents, but it happens.

I've had two SM58s get damaged beyond a point of working at shows. It's hard to do, but they found a way. That reminds me, I need to get one fixed.. It's been on the shelf for a year and a half now or so.

All of my mics are the same as well I have two out for the singers and one I use myself. Almost every singer that comes up asks me "is this one better" I tell them it doesen't matter as soon as you start singing I am going to adjust the levels anyway.

Send them back to Shure for new replacements. $54 bucks each.

Yeah, I did one. I don't really have a need right now but it's worth 54 to have another good SM58 just in case..

same mics for all of us, Sennheiser evolutionG2 wireless, it is what i would want, so it's what i give out.

I've never been a fan of the Sennheisers, but I understand that a lot of KJ's like them.

I personally use Shure Super 55's. They sound amazing. My singers love them and they are very good at keeping feedback to a minimum.

Plus they look cool. They are all I use at my show. I have 2 on stands for the singers and one for me to announce with.

Also, They are built like a brick Sh*t House. Heavy Stainless Steel.

Don't get me wrong though. Before I bought the Super 55's I used SM58's. If you're looking for a good solid mic for under $125 then the 58's work great. I just happen to prefer the super 55's over them (They Run about $250 a piece).
