I am new to this forum and I average going to the bar for karaoke once per week. I usually prefer the Sound Choice versions of songs. However, I am curious what the names of all of the major CD companies are and of those, which are best and which are worst? I know this is all a matter of opinion, but generally speaking, which companies should I consider and which should I avoid when starting up my own personal collection?

Too many variables. You might do best to do a little search first. This topic is pretty much beat an equine to necro status. Everyone has their own opinions on what is the best & worst - for example the SBG (Sweet Georgia Brown) some consider gold, I consider not useable in my shows - for the most part, now that being said, EVERY manufacturer has their own diamonds in the rough, but I would not necessarily want to build a library out of them!

Here's a recent thread on the same topic:

http://www.karaoke-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=20973

In it I put a link to an older thread which has more comprehensive takes.
