When the evidence finally comes out i think you will see that the tiger was on a mission to kill them because they were doing something to aggrivate him to that point. One killed and one wounded right near the tiger exhibit. Then the wounded one ran with the other one, 300 yards away and the tiger attacked them both there. He set out to do what he had in mind. It's a shame that the boy is dead, but it's worse the tiger is dead because of their actions. The survivors are not cooperating with the police. That tells me something could be fishy. All zoo animals are nothing more than convicts sentenced to "life" in a zoo. It can not be good for them. Mentally. We need to respect them for what they are. |

http://iht.com/articles/ap/2007/12/27/a ... scapes.php Tatiana had displayed extreme aggression before however too (about a year ago when she ripped the flesh off've her feeders arm and the woman spent a month in the hospital, shure, it could happen but it's extreme). Problem is if the walls to the Tiger Grotto were only 12.5 feet high, and the cat was able to climb or leap over that's a huge oversight on the part of the zoologists. Interesting how they initially stated 18 feet high, when in fact they were only 12 feet and big cat experts now state a cat could leap or climb 12 feet.. The moat was empty too, no water. Whether the kids were taunting that cat, we don't know.. I've never been to that zoo, weren't they in there after closing anyway ? But it also was around the cats feeding time or hunting time... This isn't the first attack of this sort either... This attack two years ago wasn't provoked directly.. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9005475/ Tigers are preditors.. They aren't domestic house kitties...the kid might've just been staring at the cat making eye contact for all we know... or the cat might've already been out... BUT.. why christmas I wonder ????? |

Very difficult to imagine a tiger jumping over a 15 ft moat and a 20ft wall. Those barrier are designed to separate human and the animals. It is supposed to act both ways; animals do not escape and (normal) human cannot get in. That tiger must be in a bad mental state and the zoo should have know about it and keep the animal out off public display area. I never like zoo; not even the best manage one and there are very few of them. I prefer to see the animals in it natural state. In this case the zoo will face a big legal battle and in the end may have to pay the victim family $$$$ |

The moat was empty, and the wall was only 12 1/2 feet high, She was an extremely aggressive animal, but a tiger is a tiger, right ? They are aggressive predators. |

Empty moat and a mentally unstable tiger is good recipe for murder in the first degree. |

Zoo keepers need to remember that now a days the Animals are on BOTH sides of the fence. I't only natural that they attempt to get at each other. I say build the walls higher AND install a $hit filter at the entrance to the zoo....Who needs Human animals anywhere anyway? Zoos are intended to be places for education, appreciation and understanding of our natural world....They were cruel idiots who were taunting the Tiger....Idiots like them don't belong there unless they too are caged or offered as prey. |

I think we all would, unfortunately there are too many poachers out there. A lot of the big animals in zoos today were bred in captivity, That said ALL animals will have their instincts. whether a tiger or a house cat. The San Francisco Zoo has been inspected in the past and no mention of the deficiency of the cage height in the reports. I'm sure had it been mentioned it would have been corrected. I know I've seen cages where the roof was enclosed by fencing. |

A couple of years ago a Gorrilla Escaped the Dallas Zoo and attacked some people. They killed the Gorilla. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4558461 One must always remember that these animals are wild animals and should be respected as such. While it would be nice if they could have sedated the animals insyead of killing them, I do not think there is a person alive that would not have killed the animals to save themselves. |

Last year a Gorilla in one of the western states mauled a man who was visiting his pet chimp "mo" that was at a place that cares for them... They were visiting mo on his birthday and another chimp got jealous and ripped the guys balls, fingers, and all sorts of stuff off.... Said he was likely jealous.. I think the most important thing to realize... (like with the mountain-lion that attacked and killed a mountain biker in california two years back), we AREN'T the strongest animals in the kingdom.. Yeah, with guns perhaps we can do damage... but unarmed... We ARE NOT strong critters.. (in the case of chimps, they average 7X the strength of an average person).. We don't stand a chance against certain hungry, reptiles, mammals, fish, etc... Are we at the top of the food chain ? With technology I suppose, yet bare-handed we are a weak species. I don't think it's tough to believe that a Tiger could climb over a 12 foot wall, are scale it with a running start... Ever see how high a little domestic cat can jump and climb... Well... A tiger is a BIG strong cat... While prior to this attack I don't think there was a compulsory 16 foot height imposed for Cat Grotto's in US zoo's... 16 feet was the minimum recommended height... and this will now become an issue I suppose.. Reason being, this cat HAD displayed very aggressive behaviour in the past... So while it's likely the cat might've been provoked, without evidence the zoo or even with it... the fact the cat got out is a REAL problem now for the zoo... So, we don't stand a chance against many cats, hippos, crocs, alligators, shark species, pythons over 11 feet, other primates, venomous species... Makes me wonder HOW tough a species we really are without are weaponry. |

I haven't seen pictures but even if the moat had been full of water it would have been useless unless it went all the way to the wall (with no land abutting it). Tigers are naturally excellent swimmers. |

No land space-The mote goes all the way up to bottom of wall....Problem is, the mote was dry. If mote had been flooded, the tiger could not have gained footing to make the leap over the wall....Swimming Tigers don't drown nor do they leap tall buildings or walls. I predict negligent parents will sue and win cause mote was dry. |

Sadly you're probably right Keith. :( Yes, the zoo was negligent in not keeping the proper barrier maintained but the jury's gonna have a helluva time with the case because the stupid kid shouldn't have been there baiting the animal to begin with. Glad I don't live in California, wouldn't wanna be called to sit on that trial. |

it shouldn't go to trial at all!! I have a next door neighbor that has a great dog. Some kids were F*n with it the other day, and he was getting really upset at them. By the time I jumped outside to stop them, the dog had cleared the fence. Luckily all the dog did was growl and bark a lot. Hes not got a mean bone in his body, but even when he plays, he nips really hard... Here's the kicker. The police came to inspect if the fence should be higher! ![]() Just IDIOCY if you ask me! |

wow One of my biggest fears is being eaten alive. I don't like being in the ocean because of sharks. I can't imagine how terrifying that must have been for those kids. The funny part is I feel for the tiger also. It's just a horrible shame it had to happen at all. |

Some kid followed my sister home from school one day (Crush kinda thing) The dog was tied up. Not mean in any way. Small mogrel. The dog jumped up on her hind legs to be friendly and her claw scratched him. Cut him from the corner of his mouth about 1" long he was bleeding like a stuck hog. It needed lots of stitches. Never went to a plastic surgeon. My dad had to pay the hospital bill. Our dog had to be kept in the cellar, under quarantine for 14 days. Us kids were not allowed to go near her. Now the dog didn't bite him. Just scratched him with her claw. She was excited to see my sister and he was with her, so he was the dogs pal too. Years later the kid blew his head off with a 12 gauge shot gun. He still had the scar. |

Could shooting a sling shot at an animal in a cage be considered animal cruelty? BESIDES BEING STUPID. I still believe the cat was on a mission and he completed part of it, before he went down. |
