Post subject:  mpg compression software??

Hi Again... found the post on renaming dat files as mpg's that sort of takes care of the vcd ripping problem..

next question... Is there software that will compress the mpgs to a more respectable size ??

If compressing mean some lost of quality, then its not the route to go. Mpeg is already small cf VOB. And if you need external drive ( for your video storage)get one that is firewire and not usb.

firewire IS a better speed, but I've not had any issues with my hard drives that are hooked up via usb.

IF you do want to compress, checkinto the AVI format... it allows the compression with software. I wouldn't recommend going ANYTHING below 25% of the original... the video especially loses a lot beyond that.

Speed is one factor that make firewire external drive the choice of video as compare to usb. I read somewhere the main reason why you should not use usb, but I can't quite explained; something to do with the way the data is transfered. For music usb is ok. This is the reason why I still have not rip my video collection yet; i have no firewire port in my old computer.

I've ran many shows using the usb connection to a hard drive, not only for mp3+gs, mp3s, but also for the mpgs! Never an issue.

As I said, I completely agree with you, though. Firewire IS better... but just because you have USB doesn't mean you shouldn't use the ol' vids!

Yep, Firewire is better because it transfer the data in isochronous fashion. What that means is that at a fixed interval, it will transfer data, which for video is a must. USB will transfer a lot of data then stop until the system is free. This can, i emphasize can, mean dropped frames on video. On audio, it makes no difference because the data you transfer is small. However, on low compressed video, Firewire will do a better job of keeping up with frames for video.
