Some posts here remind me of concepts when HI-FI was evolved into stereo. Sterero is a very basic concept Two or more mics are required Right click,download and listen to this 747 flyover. 747  The speakers should be 8-10 feet apart with both angled in towards the middle of the audience, reason being the mic towards incoming was about 45 degrees toward approach and the other pointed towards departuure. A true representaion would require the speakers at the same separtion in distance as the mics. This is an example of the doppler effect where incoming is a higher pitch and outgoing the pitch slows with the distance. The same can be done at a railroad crossing. At outside gigs we crank the volume and play this Some are ready to dive under the picnic tables.  LMAO At a 4th of July I immediately went To Martina McBride Independence Day..

When FM was invented it was possible to broadcast  2 audio channels and further promoted  stereo which was already being used on 33 1/3 vinyls. To record a live performance they had the bass bin usually on the left and the highs or strings on the right. The lead singer was recorded mono, in fact to adjust  the balance on the old recordings you set the lead singer equal volume at both speakers when at an equal distance between the speakers.  When home recording track the vocal in mono then bounce down with equal volume into both stereo tracks.

That is why at large clubs where the speakers are separated by a large distance the true stereo effect is not realized except at small areas of the listening area. However with good speaker location and direction you can get a quasi stereo effect with no channel separation though. I still out of habit increase the bass on the left speaker. Now I'm giving away trade secrets. Bottom line is all stereo does is give the dual effect of a sound on the left and a sound on the right and gives you the audio effect  that you are actually there.

Give us the reason the majority of the karaoke discs are made in stereo.

I run everything mono so everybody hears the same thing. Maybe it will work in the right enviroment but stereo belongs in living room.

For home use mainly!  Stereo is for home or small group use only.  Most venues it's not worth anything as one side of the club will motly hear one side of the music as the other will hear the other.  Van Halen songs (if done true to original) are a perfect axample as they put the guitar on one side only, so unless the entire bar could hear the entire mix from the start, they aren't going to hear the entire mix.

Yup - I have found that with my powered 10" Mackies, having the sub pounding along on the floor under one of the speakers gives such a great and even sound through every venue we've put them in. Nothing like having the same sound throughout an entire room - all the corners. Sound doesn't drop off at any area. Gotta love Mackie powered speakers!  I will never buy passive speakers again - absolute clarity through highs, mids, and lows. Interestingly, I have Bag Ends as my other main speakers and as much as they are at the top of the industry standard for quality, the powered speakers are much 'nicer' to listen to.

I gotta agree with ya Karen, I think Mackie is the "best bang for the buck".

I think it's a tossup between Mackie & JBL Eons.  I run the eon 10 g2 for a stage monitor and still get amazed at the sound it puts out. In fact in small venues have used it as a main with no difference in sound quality. I sometimes wish we had a couple more for sound distribution and filling in dead spots.

JBL's were in the running when I chose the Mackies - I found that the JBLs were good in the bottom range but the sound got thin toward the top of the range - just a personal preference I guess.  Price was a little different, too, but that wasn't my major criteria obviously.

I tested them side by side against the Mackies and JBL's and there was no comparison. Paid less than a pair of Mackie 450's, and these are real wood cabinets :shock:

Sound is fabulous.

Actually I was referring to the Mackie 350s - they are a 10-inch speaker that is phenomenal. They are $549 each but totally worth their weight in gold - they are so easy to set up on stands, etc. If I was going to invest more, I'd invest in the big daddy Mackies but at this point I'm playing catchup, having invested in a lot of equipment in the last few mos. K

If you upgrade seriously check out the Electro-Voice speakers. They are top of the line. You don't see them at Guitar City and the other outlets, because EV markets to professional users. They are build tough with all US made components.

I also run a mono setup with a sub I think you get a more even sound. Stero is great in the car or the house.
