Have you ever been called a name before, during , or after you sang a song? Some one told me "Sing the song,b****" ,and I sat down before I even got started.

I look at that 2 ways.

1. They have your number.   Or

2. That's the way the KJ lets everyone act.

I would not attend shows that are run like a kindergarden play ground.

If someone starts to hassle the singers, which has happened in the past a few times, the bar owner or bartender must be told to contain them before they start chasing away business.  One stupid patron can kill business.   So sacrifice one for the good of the bar.  One person isn't spending nearly the amount of the mass.  Kick him to the curb immediately and don't think twice.

Nobody wants to be told they suck or have things thrown at them.  I have heard of these happening at other shows.   I won't put up with it, because it is a direct reflection of me and the quality of my show.

Some KJs don't care how people act.  They think it's funny or cute.

So the guy call you a b****....

There are two possibilites.  Either the statement is true in which case there is no offence because if the shoe fits... or the statement was false in which case it is foolish to be offended by because someone is an idiot.

if someone called me a name, then I'd ask the owner or bartender if they approved of such things. If they said they didn't, I'd tell them to fix the problem. If they said they did, then find another place to sing. hand the microphone back to the kj, and leave the premises. If it's YOUR SHOW, then you have EVERY right to ask that singer courtesy be upheld, and that you weren't going to the next singer until and apology is issued, or the offending person is kicked out.

SILENCE speaks volumes, and if the owner thinks you will quit over such nonsense, they might take action. Unless you're doing it for $50 a night, and they think that they own you. Then you are kinda stuck in a rut.

Also, my initial response would be to cut them back to the core... but then that's me. "Sorry, the only bi*ch I know is the one that sh*t you out!"

I went to a show where the KJ's were acting like a kindergarten playground. Every other word was "you know what" or "you know what" and that was just idiotic and stupid. Numerous people left. The KJ's really acted retarded. Obviously, the owner and manager didn't care just so long as $$ was made.

For the most part haven't had a problem, one on night had a drunk giving some cr-p about the song I was doing, the normal stuff, "sing it this way" & "hell I can do better than that",  So I looked at the KJ, smiled and walked over his way, held the mic out and said "go ahead".. His response......  Huh, me oh no  not me... No more trouble from him since, ....Tom

The "B" word may or may not be appropriate use of words here. The anti-KJ sentiment seems to be the pattern to her posts. Seems like she does not like KJ's or computers very much.

Not a good place to come if you want to bash KJ's .....IMHO

A comment like that could be handled pretty easily especially if you had the mic in your hand. It's not very cool in my book but I woulnd't let some drunk jerk run me off the stage either. Also the KJ should have not put up with that kind of behavior.

Having been in Tennessee and runing bands on my system is why I'm like that.

We get the B*tch word and profanity used almost every night unfortunately when it's 1am-4am. It seems that's what the cool-hip thing to say now for young kids.

It usually starts with "What's Up B*tches" from every other girl- then a girl sings "I Touch Myself" by the Divynls with every other phrase beginning with the F-word.
The crowd usually reacts favorably (other than the older folks)....then a guy sings "Creep" by Radiohead with every other word "i'm a F**king Creep, i'm a F**king Weirdo" What the F am i doing here".etc...etc...you get the idea. Everynight both songs are sung.. Ugh!!!

Used to bother the "F" out of me (ha!) because i don't personally curse, but the owners/managers usually laugh when it happens- and don't mind it when it's that's late in the evening. We're still fairly busy, but most people over 40 are long gone to bed.

And a lot of our songs go the Hip-Hop route after midnight and we all know Snoop, Dre, Eminem, Biggie, Nelly, etc...have explicit lyrics so it's come to be expected to use those words even though most manus leave them out.

NOW if someone/anyone curses before midnight on my mics, their mic gets turned down or i remind them "this a family show"- cursing allowed ONLY after 12!"

BTW, our shows are 95%  20-somethings so noone ever really gets offended.
I've learned to just laugh it off and go home paid for the night.

Resistance Is Futile when it comes to a young drunk crowd having fun! Our shows get more and more packed because of word-of-mouth that we're laid-back. I'm sure that's why the owners don't mind- they're making BANK.

I'm SURE this is not typical of MOST of ya'll's karaoke shows out there, but ours is situated and caters to the young yuppie-types that think they're cool.

The HOME-BASED KARAOKE KIDS whose parents bought home units from WalMart have ALL GROWN UP and THEY ALL want to be rockstars and get tons of attention- good or bad. Hey, i make good living off of them, so WTF  LOL

I run my show like it's a playground.  I use a lot of bathroom humor.  I'm the best KJ in town (my show runs fair, fast and smooth).  Maybe if the others in town were cool like me, they'd start getting some props too.  I won't tolerate blatant disrespect though.  I know why people come to my shows and I protect their interests.  If someone were to call me a bxtch, I'd have to assess its context before deciding what to do.  I don't take name calling too seriously.  I NEVER call people names (except the bartender Anna who I refer to as Banana Lady, or Rosanna Rosanna, Anna, or Beer Lady) I plug the banana show she does on Thursday (not really) and let people know she reuses the same old banana at each show.  That kind of stuff is funny.  Oh, and I make fun with people's names, like throw some pig latin in, or use song references, or movie quotes or just make crap up ... (Neo Theo from Rio with his new Geo).  Often times I do sound like a retard, but I find it make people feel a part of the show.  Personality is the key.  I make friends with my crowd.  Not the individuals, per se, but with the crowd.    

I was invited to show last night because the girl running it had no clue about anything.  It was her second show on a house system.  It was a set it and forget it operation.  One thing I noticed was she was void of a personality.  Kind of comical, but completely disengaging.

My girlfriend and I were eating at another place in town and was watching this guy set up for his show.  You could tell right away this guy was too cool for the gig.  He was the type that wouldn't dare say something stupid, lest he look like he was having fun.  We didn't stay for the show.

Another show, the guy plays way too much filler music, a complete song almost between every singer.  When he's talking with someone he let's a karaoke song end without any fan fare.  His lyrics have way too much garbage in them.  What fun is that?

Prima Donna's and Purists make karaoke shows work, and I mean like a job, work.  Karaoke is supposed to be fun and games; it's entertainment.  Throw a party, and they will come!!!!  Consistency is the key.  People want to know what they can expect.  Stand up for your singers when they're being harassed/heckled.  Make sure they know you're on their side.

I agree. Blatant disrespect for anyone is not allowed. It's all fun and games and everyone is laid-back and having a good time.

We do have several professional singers at the show but they are secure with themselves and don't try to play the prima-donna card. It wouldn't work in this environment anyways.

I've never used "bathroom humor" before at my shows, but if it works for you and goes over well, then that's a million times better than a kj with zero personality!

My humor is more along the lines of "put your hands together for Dave....bon jovi...Jon's younger black brother from the hood!" ...silly but works!

I LOVE THAT SONG!!!! The F word in that song does add a little more to it.

Actually, "Creep" by Radiohead IS supposed to have the F word in it, but it is not every other word like the way the guy referred to above sings it.  Every version I have seen so far is CLEAN but it is supposed to in the line "You're so VERY special" have the F bomb instead of "very".  I have NEVER heard anyone sing this song without "editing" this line.  

Personally, I think it is rather tacky to add the F word to songs in excess.  However, if it SUPPOSED to be in the song, that's another issue.  A few songs come to mind that have "clean" karaoke versions but most "correct" - the SC version of "Building A Mystery" by Sarah McLachlan, "Army" by Ben Folds Five (on SC) and "The Battle Of Who Could Care Less" - Ben Folds Five on Sunfly.

It cheapens the show.  Whether you personally think so or not.

Yes, it cheapens the show on many levels, but it somehow generates more business here where i'm at. (not violence though) Sign of the times i guess-  hip hop music is the most popular genre by young people nowadays, be that good or bad. I personally don't like it but am required to play it. (it offends the Christian values instilled in me but i've learned to ignore it and not let it influence my personal self)

It definately shows up in the Z tape at the end of each show. And only a few actually degrade themselves with profanity while trying to be funny. It's too easy to blame alcohol on bad behavior. MOSt are tourists having a good time, that's all.

Of 10 years doing shows, only a couple of complaints because someone mouthed off, but you can only prevent it after it's already been done. And i was asked to remove 2 Live Crew's songs from the book. Didn't know how bad they were til a group from Detroit tried to sing a couple of them. They were cut off within 30 seconds.

95% Chance the person was totally drunk. The most likely explanation of most the 5% remaining would be drugs. Sometimes a combo.

If you want to get paid the big bucks for doing karaoke you are going to have to assoicate with drunks. Karaoke cant handle big crowds, at best only 15-17 songs an hour. The only way to make it pay well is for the people to drink drink drink.

Don't get shocked if someone is rude or unruly after 12 beers. It might actually be a lot more that they have had.

Choose.

KJ for casual drinkers, get paid less, or deal with drunks who are often rude and crude. Remember you are only worth what you earn the bar. THe bar sells booze. Some bard cater to real drunks others less so.
