Post subject:  Looking for SC8749 - Pop Hits Of The 90's - Vol. 8. Any help?

Hey folks,
I'm letting my contest winners pick the next disc I buy and someone just chose SC8749 - Pop Hits Of The 90's - Vol. 8.  I thought it was still in print but....it ain't.  It's not on ebay or Sound Choice's site and links on doowopshop and starrkaraoke are dead.  Any ideas on where to get it?!  Any help is much appreciated!  Maybe a private message so no sneaky peeps can get it before me?  Pretty please with happy new year on top?
Thanks,
Adam

Lesson #1

Don't let customers pick discs for you to buy.

Maybe tell them you'll get a certain song if it's available.

Thanks!  It was my own fault.  I made a list of discs I want and printed it out to give to the winner.  A friend of mine who has 8000 of his own legally bought songs (WAY more than me and he's never even hosted!) won our David Bowie contest and chose it.  I inquired with sites in England and Australia and now Platerpuss.  Hope someone's still got it!

Don't let your customers pick what you buy, smart move there.  You want this, um, NO!?!?!?  Yes you get what YOUR customers want to sing, otherwise you may be buying stuff that you may think is hot, but will sit on your shelf & gather dust for years.  Is there any particular song that they were hinting at, maybe you can compile a custom disc with those songs.

It is always a pain to find those out of print CDs....

I was looking for another sc disk in the past and looked in about 30 different web site companies...

Finally found one that claimed they had it. I ordered it and they said "woops" we dont have that one.

Some of the former SC disks are very hard to find some disks can can reasonably sell for 3 times or more the normal sale price of about $17 for a SC disk but at the same time, the same disk can sometimes be found at a discount by someone liquidating or who does not know the value. Some of the rare disks are also remade as fake copies so be aware of too good deals.

I made a big list of discs I want and when people win my contests, I let them choose.  It's part of the fun and I don't have to think too hard about what I should buy next because I'm new and there's TONS of stuff I want.  If I have to occasionally hunt down a deleted title or buy an import, so be it.  There are British discs I want a LOT.

I give my contest winners a choice of a "one band" (i.e. Legend/Zoom) disc, a pre-made mix or picking 5 songs on the next mix cd I buy.  Whatever they choose, I get stuff *I* want.

Most of the songs I want on this disc aren't available anywhere else.  Oh well....
Fake Plastic Trees Radiohead 1
Nearly Lost You Screaming Trees 2
Bittersweet Big Head Todd & Monsters 3
Backwater Meat Puppets 4
Sour Times Portishead 5
Dizz Knee Land Dada 6
3 Strange Days School Of Fish 7
Somebody To Shove Soul Asylum 8
Everybody Knows Concrete Blonde 9
Twice As Hard Black Crowes, The 10
Supernova Phair, Liz 11
Doll Parts Hole 12
Sweet Jane Cowboy Junkies 13
Jackie Brown Mellencamp, John 14
Stone Cold Crazy Metallica 15

Interesting, I use to buy what I wanted as well when I started out, ended up with a bunch of dust collectors.  I then assumed the mentallity that I in the business for the people that come in to sing with me, so I cater to them as far as what they want as they are going to be the ones to come in & sing.  I can always buy stuff I want for my personal stash or to add in after my customer requests - lot more discs that get used over some that have probably only been played by me.  Anyway, good luck.

It looks like most of the songs on that list didn't get a lot of commercial radio play.

People come in and ask for album songs that may have never reached the radio.  They also ask for songs by some popular local groups and wonder why i don't have them on karaoke.

The disc companies are only going to spend money on songs that they think will give them a nice return on their investment.  Obscure album cuts won't do that.

May depend on where the location was.  I have that disc & 6 of those songs get done pretty regular.  But they were also pretty heavy on the radio around here at one time.

Are you talking about the SC8749 disc or his song list?

Yes to the disc.  No to his song list.

The disc IS the songlist - yes I have it, yes it gets used regularaly (6 songs anyway).  So which is it the disc or the songlist - kind of a contrdiction there don't you think since they are one in the same?

That is the main reason apparently SC disks go out of print, one or more songs from the disk are no longer licensed to be sold by the owners of the rights. Sound choice also sometimes comes up with "R" disks which have many of the same songs as a previous disk but 1-3 or so changes, again these are due to licensing rights. I suspect the initaial contract is only for a limited number of copies of a song in some cases, and once that limit is reached it was not renewed.

That said I have noticed that sometimes some of the songs Not avalible on custom disks direct from sound choice can still be found (as sound choice versions ) from other legit distributors of custom cds such as MyCDG. If this is all entirely legit and Mycdg is not keeping totaly up to date on what is "allowed" is open to interpretation. Then again MyCDG might have bought the right to sell a set number of copies before the pool ran out at the source (Sound choice).

When it comes to getting what the singers want, eventually it gets really tough. I have been searching for a song request for some time now. I am quite sure it is not made by any of the major manus and most of the small ones as well. I even have had major trouble finding the origional song in an album for vocal removal, as I have visited about 7 music stores looking for the non karaoke version with no sucess.

If you provide requests regularly in new songs many more of your singers will become regulars.

The song requests may not be your favorite songs, and sometimes you may not even know them, but if the singers are happy then the gig goes better.

Well you obviously can't get everything customers want, as some stuff isn't even available for karaoke.  SOme requests could be pretty off the wall & you still have to look into this as a factor.  I never guarantee that I will get something, I always tell them when they write it down on the request clipboard that I will take a look & 'try' to get it if possible.

Yup - "I'll sure do my best to find it for you."  Not always possible. Don't want to stir up a nasty nest here, but MTU makes software that you can create your own CDGs with. I don't do it but I do know people who have done it for special circumstances (singing at weddings, funerals, etc.).  My understanding is that it is very easy to do, though like I said above, I haven't used it.

I never realized that SC 8749 has joined the ever-growing list of discs discontinued by Sound Choice.  Although SC 8749 is not the best disc of SC's Hits Of The 90's series there ARE some great tunes that DID get considerable radio airplay.  The show where I go to karaoke has this disc and songs DO get pulled off of it occasionally.

"Dizz Knee Land" - Dada is the MAIN one I do off this disc.  This song certainly got a great deal of airplay on the radio.  A few others that I remember from the radio:  "Backwater" - Meat Puppets, "Doll Parts" - Hole, "Bittersweet" - Big Head Todd & The Monsters (this one gets done on occasion), and "Somebody To Shove" - Soul Asylum.  "Stone Cold Crazy" - Metallica gets done occasionally as well.

It MAY still be possible to find a SC 8749 in stock somewhere.

Pretty much everyone that comes to my night is into the kind of music on this disc.  Since I'm limited to discs because I don't have a laptop to download files, I'll occasionally buy some custom discs and try to get as many requests as I can.  I have forms in my books and most of my requests are for stuff that was never huge on the US charts.  I put the list up on my myspace page and someone in on the opposite coast saw it and actually sent me a really good homemade version of L7's "Pretend We're Dead" when he saw it on my list of requests I've got that no one's ever made.  So far....

PS I'm tempted to get the songs I want from the Sound Choice site ($60 yikes) but I really wanted the Portishead song more than any song on the disc.  Murphy's Law!

the sixty bucks is a BARGAIN compared to not having those songs. You might find a few of them on other things, but more than a few are going to only be available that way!

Yeah, and sixty bucks is a bargain when you can select the songs that you want.  I've spent 34 bucks for a disc that maybe had three usable songs for me.
