I'm buying a new computer from Dell and was wondering what some of you use to record yourself on your computer. I know ProTools doesn't support Vista. Does anyone have suggestions on recording software that will let you record over your own voice with harmony? and maybe some very good slow to fast speed echo?

Pat :)

Reaper is a very good multitracker. If you have been using Pro tool then you should have no problem with it.

I've never used Pro Tool but was looking into it when I discovered that it's not supported by Windows Vista.  How about this "Reaper".  Is it hard to use and do you know if it works with Vista?
Thanks.....Pat

Yes it works with Vista. The person who developed it is the same guy who did winamp. You can have a fully working demo from the site above.

I checked it out and it sounds good. I even looked it up on YouTube. It may be overkill for me though because I don't want it for anything but laying vocal tracks so I can sing harmony with my own lead vocals. Do you know if the software can do that without having some sort of external board?  I'm fairly ignorant of the technical side of recording.

Don't be afraid of it. Download the program and the manual and try it out. If you don't like it you don't need to pay for it.

The other program that many people here use is Audacity. It has all the functions that you need and is about the easiest one to use: free.

You may also want to try KRISTAL a free program and also very easy to use.

Cool Edit pro is also good but even the later version (Adobe Audition)
is not as good as Reaper. And this is not free.

Why would you get upset?  I am in the beginning stages of recording our customers right now & they all love it, have heard nothing but great feedback.

Not to get off on a tangent..but if you are worried about taking your discs to a show to prove you own them, in case someone sees your computer, why would you make illegal recordings?  And broadcast the fact?   Doesn't make sense...

Mainly because I am losing customers all around town to the other clubs that do when I don't. only difference is i'm not going to charge - they do!  Have to compete wherever I can.
