Post subject:  Mackie Hrmk 824 or 624 studio monitors for karaoke system?

Hi,

I'm about to build a karaoke system at home.  I just bought a karaoke player with an internal hard drive.  Right now, I'm looking to buy speakers for the system.  I previously used a home theatre system that sounded horrible with the vocals.  Now, I'm looking to get some better audio quality.  I was reading from these forums that the Macke SRMs are really nice.  However, the problem is that I'm living in Japan, and it was hard to find Mackie SRMS here in Japan.  I went to a bunch of stores, and could only find the HRMK624 or 824 studio monitors.

Would the studio monitors work well for karaoke vocals?  I was reading that the SRMs provide a live concert like experience.  I'm hoping the studio monitor quality will be comparable to the SRMs and a lot better than the home theatre system I had.  I'm going to be hooking up my system to my TV in my living room, which is not very big.  Would the studio monitors work for normal tv usage and dvds as well?

On top of that, I realize that the studio monitors require an external source of power.  Do I need an amp or a mixer, or both?  Thanks.

Studio monitors will work if you don't have to turn them up too loud.  Studio monitors are usually considered 'nearfield' monitors in which you (or the engineer) are usually sitting within a few feet from them to get the full benefit, they aren't designed to be all out PA speakers.

Thanks, I see.  I'm not planning on turning them up super loud or anything, so perhaps it would be fine.  If I do turn it up really loud, will the speakers start to sound worse or something?

Just a bigger chance of blowing them out.

And I believe Mackie studio monitors are probably a LOT more expensive than regular speakers??

Yeah, each 824 is around 700 bucks I think.

Also, what kind of amp would I need to run this system?  Like brand/wattage and stuff.  Would a home theatre amp work?

Well those are active monitors meaning they already have an amp built in.  But again, they aren't designed for PA use, just nearfield monitoring.  And at $1200 a pair for the 824 you could get a really nice PA system for home use that would be designed for live vocals & can get loud IF you needed to!

Since you are in Japan maybe a BMB may be the speakers you may want to have a closer look at. They are not the greatest speakers but they look at home in a living room setting.
