I am 45 years old and scared. I really yelled to the top of my lungs at two football games one week apart in December, then yelled at some drunk driver on the Interstate. Later sometime during this yelled at my son for something he did. I then went sing karaoke the next week. I am usually not a person who yells at anything.... this just "happened that way". I speak for a living all day long in person and on the phone. I gradually felt like a strain during each one of those episodes but didnt think much of it until I got tired of talking by the end of each day. Now it has come to a point where my lower throat or vocal cords feel inflamed hurt when I talk and I have decided to STOP ALL TALKING this weekend. I am scared to go to the doctor...... I know that sounds stupid....... CAN ANYONE TELL ME THAT THEY HAVE HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE AND RECOVERED ON YOUR OWN. HELP PLEASE. |

Dear Hawk, Go home, make yourself a Hot Toddie or two, Sit down, Relax, don't yell at your wife because you know you really love her! , and call me in the morning, your voice loss is only temporary it happens to the best of us especially in the winter. ![]() |

Wait until you get my age. It then takes longer and longer to loosen and soften the vocal chords but they gradually do come back. My biggest problem now is I used to do Dayo on a regular basis. Now during the rare times that I do it I have to make sure my teeth are glued in real tight. ![]() |

So if somebody posts anonymously on an internet message board that they've had a similar experience that'll be enough reason for you to not see a doctor? Every time I throw up I lose my voice for 2 days, is that similar enough for you? And you think it could possibly be cancer, but you don't want to go to a doctor because why? Does cancer not start harming you until it's officially diagnosed or something? The last I heard, ignoring cancer isn't the most effective treatment. You're a grown man, you shouldn't have to ask this kind of stuff on a message board, you should know your body well enough by now to know what lingering weird things should be examined by a doctor. And if you are going to do it, you probably shouldn't use a freaking karaoke board to ask medical questions! |

Absolute voice rest for as many days as possible. Then see a doctor. I had a young guy come in a couple of weeks ago, lost a lot of his range because he had to have surgery done on his vocal cards - a case of strep throat when too far because he wouldn't go to the doctor. He now has PERMANENT damage. I've been in the medical field for years and years and as much as it is NOT a nice thought to hear something you don't particularly want to hear from a doctor, I agree with the above statement. It doesn't help to leave it. It sounds as though, based on what you said, that you have done some real straining of the vocal cords. ... And the older we get, the longer it takes to get better!... See a doctor, immediately, if you value your voice. This is not medical advice, just what I have read on the vocalist mail lists and groups. If you have nodes on your vocal folds, there may be something that complete vocal rest can do for you. I mean no talking, none, especially not whispering. Other than that, if rest doesn't solve it, there may be surgery. This is not something you want to have, so see a doctor and consider a couple weeks of complete vocal rest. |

don't panic, i sang with nodes on my vocal cords for years until i could sing no higher than a frog....sounded like it too, betting i have them now...i had surgery everything came out fine, altho i now sing like a girl, but i knew that going in....i think ur voice can take a lot more then we think, and when it can't it shuts down...saving us a lot more harm...but what do i know....Billy |

At the risk of being arrested for practicing medicine without a license, my unprofessional opinion for your voice is "stop yelling." As for your high blood pressure...yelling vents unwanted steam. As for not being able to sing...that's in another thread. ![]() |

Who knows, I sing for hours a day, and my throat gets sore, and feels swollen now.. Get's scratchy and raw, and this time of year a vulnerability like that coupled with sinuses and post nasal drip, germs and viruses, can easily be a raw passage where upper respiratory bugs settle too... Have you tried gargling with salt water ? zinc losenges, what are you doing for it ? Might be the start of a headcold.. who knows....Give it some time and see tough to know, dry sinuses from electric baseboard heat if you don't have a humidifier... 45 years of age was an age my body gave way and yelling, or doing anything strenuous (like thinking while typing) caused strains and discomfort for awhile... We break down, so take it easy, yelling WILL hurt your throat, but you might survive ! I like to sing for hours and hurt my throat, and then cry to females about how sick I am because I need female attention and a social life... but that's just me.. Not a good thing to look for assurance for medical conditions on the Internet, fact is NOBODY knows you, or knows what's what regarding your physical condition, and to look to strangers who aren't medical people for consoling isn't assuring you anything.. YOu can call a nurse hotline, ER during a slow time, and see what they say... I don't like docs either, but calling a psychic hotline, or asking strangers on the internet does no good. Call a pharmacist, see what he says.. THere are less threatening options. I can identify with fear of doctors, and crappy bedside manner. |

You shouldn't sing that much. Get a voice teacher and have them help you move along. Your regimen should be something like: 1. Get well rested and well hydrated. 2. Warm up gradually using a warmup routine (I use the one from voicelesson.com). 3. Sing a couple of warmup songs, i.e. ones in the middle of your range that aren't too strident. 4. Let 'er rip, but sing for 30-45 minutes. Then take a break. 5. Try not to sing for more than 2 hours a day at your age. 6. Take the occasional vocal rest day -- your voice will thank you for it and you will sing better. |
