Well after reading many post on this website in support of the SM58 thought I would go and buy one. I currently use Sennheiser 835 and I have to say chaps the Shure SM58 is a poor relation. It. lacks in volume and doesn’t cut through the mix as good as the 835. I have had the 835s for 3 years they have been dropped (hard ceramic surfaces) and survived without a dent and still sound as good as the day I bought them and for less bucks than the 58. Not interested in the polar ice cap circular graphs just going off what my ears (and the singers) tell me. |

Each system reacts differently to different mics, The Senns are definitely a brighter mic, but if I used them on my system I get feedback from hell - without doing some major frequency cuts. The SM58 is a nice flat response mic, it adds no color like the 835 tend to do. They are both good mics though, just different systems & situations will react differently. I've had my 58's since 94 (actually just replaced one due to a worn XLR clip) working 7 nights & they still sound great, change the wind screen on them every 8-12 months & they are like new again. |

I have my speakers mounted behind the singers, never had a problem. think this could be down to the active system I am running I.e smaller satallite speakers (8 inch) don't know not just me but the punters |

I bought a sennheiser 835 for my husband to replace his old battered sm58...he still prefers the shure  but I am slowly getting him weaned off it.
I use a sennheiser freeport cordless and once I got over the shock of the clarity and every single mistake being exposed to the world, I just love it |

When I've worked with female vocalists I've found many of them prefer the dynamic microphone that offers more vocal coloration, and some even like the AKG-D9000 as opposed to the SM-58, others even a cheapo like the Audio Tech headset PRO-8HE (go figger), sometimes the cheaper microphone has a brighter response too, and some like the edge added...I think a factor here is how a person working the board EQ's and tweaks.. I also think males for some of the lower frequencies in general feel the Shure SM-58 is a flatter responding easier microphone to work with, some women want more coloration. Some love the Senn, but to say "Blows away" an SM-58 isn't a fair statement because for many and their vocal features THAT is the industry standard for the 100 dollar microphone.. I wonder how that model senn would compare to an SM-57 ? Just curious... The SM-58 is a multipurpose all around GOOD microphone that serves many apps... Not just vocals, it's a safe bet to have around.. Has anyone done head-t0-heads with the SM-48 and SM-58... I own both, but on lower volumes in a smaller area I can't tell the difference (except for around 20 bucks).. Quite honestly when I hack a song, I'm noticing I do not like the SM-58 but I use a Shure 565, which on paper looks similar but it's a FAR brighter sensitive microphone... Different strokes I guess, but for a multitude of people to share using, I think the flatter microphone is a safer bet.. Not all want coloration from the mic |

I have a guy that brings in his own 835 when he comes to sing. I know that when I swap out the mic, the channel eq must be adjusted quite a bit in the cuts or highs & mids somewhere around 2k. |

I have sung a lot through both mics, and I like both. I prefer the 58 just a little more, myself, but they are both real good. As others have noticed, the 835 is hotter and has more of a 3K presence hump. I just change channel trim and EQ. |

Senn, any day of the week. Of the mics I put it third. enn first, then the Apex 850(a $30 mic believe it or not), then the Shure, then the Sampson. |

I'm pretty sure there is a reason that when you watch singers/bands on television, what you see is the head of the SM58 - cordless and corded. K |

Not all the time, not by a long shot. You see a lot of Sennheiser, a lot of EV, and the occasional Audix too, as well as Neumann and some others. |

A little off topic but since we are being inundated on the news by our political primaries I always take notice of the microphones that they speak through and they are usually Shures followed by an occasional Sennheiser. |

Actually I wonder about sponsorship. I have a friend who is in an old classic rock-and-roll band, and they use EV because EV came in and gave them six ND-767s. They tried them, liked them, and now use them exclusively. They replaced SM-58s. (This happened about 15 years ago, I think.) |
