Post subject:  VocoPro UHF-5800... worth it?
Hello everyone! well i am in the process of adding karaoke to my DJ'ing buisness and have everything I need accept for CDG's and microphones. Is this a good package for microphones? I already have one that I have used for DJ'ing.

Any recomendations will help! thanks

No one here will recommend VocoPro to you.

The general recommendation I have seen is AKG WMS-40 (what I own) at the lower end, and Shure SM-58 wireless on the higher end. There are other good choices, I am sure.

Unless you REALLY NEED a wireless mic NOW, I would wait a while.

Since all analog TV signals in the US will switch over to digital in 2009, why spend money on something that is gonna be obsolete in a year? You are gonna see wireless mic system go really cheap before the switch, manufacturers and suppliers that have the old technology try to get rid of their old systems / stock at bargain basement prices.

I have been keeping an eye on the discussions on other chat boards on how the switch will effect me with all the wireless systems I use: wireless mics & speakers. I am most likely gonna have to change over to something that is not be in the frequency range that digital TV, (in my area), is not using for the reason of interference. You should always check who is using what frequencies in your area.


To quote somebody from another board, somebody who is a moderator, VERY highly respected for his technical knowledge and IS totally up on the subject:

Nothing is changing in the VHF spectrum. It is still crowded, prone to interference and the bandwidth isn't all that great (fine for vocals though).

The FCC is currently conducting phase 2 testing of the proposed white space devices that will operate in the UHF band. These are public tests if you feel like going to Washington DC. The tests are currently being conducted in labratory conditions and if they pass, they'll move to real life conditions. The future of analog UHF mics will be determined by the outcome of these tests and the FCC approval of white space devices. For now, I would just urge people to save up their pennies for something new.


My Shure SM 58 Beta died 2 months ago and is not being replaced till the fallout of the digital TV signals has been implemented / resolved. As for what other systems I have, I will continually use them till they die or cannot use them without interference from the change.

Just like anything else you should be doing, do your OWN research on the subject before you go spend money and not just take any one persons advice, not even mine.

IMHO, I have frequented at least three shows which have the Vocopro 5800.  I, and seemingly everyone else who sing at those shows, like them!

Because of my experience with them I purchased Vocopro wireless mics for my show.  In light of the pending FCC changes and other considerations, I opted to purchase a VHF model.  I have never been disappointed with my decision.  I find the unit easy to operate and I like the way the receiver functions (good range, no hum, no static, no interferance with other electronics in the venue). And I KNOW my singers like using the mics!

Of course, there are those who would not consider anything less than than the "best" which means, if nothing else, expensive!  That, of course, it a personal choice.  I'd hate, however, to see a $300-500 mic get dropped, kicked around, etc.

The four Vocopro mics included with the 5800 model can be found for as little as $300.  Their broadcast range is excellent (can easily go 1/2 block) and all four can be replaced for the price of a "top-quality" single mic.  You can also opt to get a headset with the 5800, which I think is a great and necessary addition. Since I couldn't find a Vocopro VHF model that offers a headset option, I purchased a separate VHF headset (not Vocopro)!    

Alas, it might be foolhardy to get any UHF unit.  But, again, that's why I purchased VHF units!

I bought the 5800 4 mic system with 4, 2' xlr cords to CFX 11 mixer, gicve great mic control, they sound great for the money, they have a 1 year warranty, one stopped working right away, I called vocopro the sent me a new one overnght, later one got dropped on concrete and broke the case(plastic), they replaced that one also, I've had them in service for about 1 1/2 years I'm happy........
