I just found a great new open mic blues jam that I want to sing at. The musicians are terrific, the PA equipment sounds great, the venue is nice, overall seems like a friendly crowd. I don't have a large blues repertoire so I'm looking for recommendations.

I sing George Benson's Masquerade, Lynrd Skynyrd's Ballad Of Curtis Leow(really Southern Rock), Gary Moore's Still Got The Blues for You, but I can't really think of much other than that. I want to add more blues songs to my repertoire anyways to round out my genres.

Sound Choice has 5 Volumes dedicated to the Blues, One of my all time favorites is The Sky is Crying by Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Guitar Solo is fabulous and the song usually evokes a positive response from most crowds on the quality of the music alone.

Here's one for you, try " Got no Shame " by Brother Kane. It starts out with a sweet harmonica riff, then has a wicked guitar lead in the middle and then more harmonica at the end, more of a bluesy rock song, but blues none the less. My brother does it and even people that have never heard it before ask what song it is and by what artist. Rudy.

I'm glad you mentioned that Morgan, I have Sweet Georgia Brown, Pioneer CAVS 21 and 22, Supercore, All Hits and a Magic Tracks CAVS disk. I wish I had the Soundchoice blues set, I'm sure it's good. Thank you all for the suggestions, if you have more that's great too. I may be able to download some of them from Tricerasoft if I don't have them in my collection.

Just did some checking around and Hoochie coochie Man and Mannish Boy are exactly the kinds of songs I'm looking for, perfect.

I know I have one or two Allman Brothers songs in my collection and several Lynrd Skynyrd songs too.

So I started thinking, is George Benson's Masquerade really a Blues song or is it Jazz?

I'd say jazz, but then there is big cross-over. When I think of blues, I think of songs where you are really given free license to go all over with the melody - lots of nasty, grimy guitar solos, and the kind of beat that makes people tap their feet without even thinking about it.

actually would consider it lounge...its not really jazz and its not really bluezy enough to be torch

These are all either standard 12-bar Chicago or Texas blues and many blues bands play these. But to really find some REAL blues songs---start doing a blues song search and get a few blues CD's and transcribe the words off the songs you like and then start practicing them to the point you have them cold memorized---well enough to perform on stage and excell in front of a crowd. My favorite blues site is DELTAGROOVE PRODUCTIONS. You will find THE REAL DEAL THERE.

That oughta keep ya busy.

But if your going to sing at blues jams--better first go find something on the band's play list as that is what they will be able to play from--not neccesarily something you request.

As to myself I bypassed the Jam route and simply auditioned for a blues band who had put an add up on Craig's List Musicians section and began singing for real--did 3 shows. Sang Muddy Waters, Big Walter Horton, Little Walter and Kim Wilson songs---a stripped down 3-piece harmonica band. Lasted for about 9 months until band drama happened. So I got to live the dream of going from Karaoke to being A REAL LIVE BLUES BAND SINGER!! :) So it can be done!!! BUt bew prepared to be dedicated to do all the work, rehearsal and practice neccessary to make it be real and good.
