Hello All, I'm new to the Karaoke thing, but I'm really interested in trying it out.
Problem is, I have no idea how. I've always been a singer, as far as I can remember and I love all kinds of music. I usually sing for fun and often get asked to sing for friends, but karaoke is a whole different animal. How do I practice? How to I find good karaoke cds, or can I make my own? I just got a karaoke machine for christmas. Should I get a 'real' mic? I sing just about anything, lately mostly torch, blues and standards, but I can sing from pop, rock, country(old and new) to spanish ballad and mariachi. Anyone in Houston willing to let me tag along and see how it's done?

For practicing at home, just use the toy mic that came with your machine. You really don't need anything better than that unless you are planning to record yourself and share with others.
As for finding good CDGs, well, each of our opinions are subjective as to what brand is better than the other. Rather than to start stating brands to look for, what I would suggest is that you go out to some karaoke shows regularly (once or twice a week), and just listen (really listen) to each of the songs that are sung in the evening. Pay particularly close attention to the songs that you personally like (and would probably sing yourself). If the KJ does not have the Manufacturer codes listed for each song, then ask him/her, "What disc was that song off of?". Then keep a list of what you liked, and go to someone else's show on some other visit. See if the KJ has some of the same songs (you listed) in their book, and see if they have it on the same version or a different brand. If it's on a different version, maybe you can get the KJ to play a little snippet of it for you to menatlly compare (if the KJ has time to do this for you). The other suggestion is to just go on to the various Karaoke websites (that sell CDGs), and look up the songs you want and see what discs they are on. Then you can decide (based on what you have judged already) if you want to buy it for your own personal library or not.

I know of a group of karaoke enthusiasts that meets in Cypress that you could hang out with and get some pointers without having to spend all of your time in a bar. If that's not too far for you send me a PM and I'll put you in touch with them.
