Post subject:  Pay to legalize your hard drive?
Would you be willing to pay a one time fee to "legalize" all the music on your hard drive?

Like a registration fee?   Let's say they offered an amnesty and put out a date to do it by, no questions asked.    You register and pay, you're good to go.

How much per song?

2 cents?
5 cents?
25 cents?

More?


Would you bother to do it at all?

To prove it is illegal would cost multibucks. I have a better plan. Provide legal downloads like everybody else has at a reasonable cost. Many venues now have wifi services I currently download during a gig from tricerasoft and Cavs and look forward to to the days when we have access to everything and can download on a as needed basis. That is the only way we can turn a profit large enough to further promote karaoke and get rid of the public stigma that it has.

Lets start promoting ways to do this as professionals and not as dog eat dog like the rest of the music industry. When I meet my maker and go through the final judgement I'm sure there is going to be a list of illegal songs I had on my illegal HDD in the illegal venue and sang by drunks. And to be honest with you he is the only one qualified to make those judgements at this time. So talk to him not me.....

Actually in Canada a DJ can transfer their music to harddrive for commercial use by paying a yearly fee to AVLA.  Unfortunately KJs can't do this because of the sync rights, but I believe AVLA is working on this.

First of all if they are on a hard drive, some compensation will have to be made, because you already broke the "Law."   The fee would be reparations to forgive your already committed sins.    I would pay a fee to be considered legal.  As far as providing reasonably priced songs for us, what planet are you on?   They don't have to provide anything, let alone a reasonable price.  Do you consider your songs reasonably priced now?  

They are cheap, but it's still expensive.  And they would have to charge a format shifting fee, which would add to the cost per song.   Nothing ever gets cheaper.  

I just saw diesel selling for $4.19.   Food will be going up for sure as so with everything else that is delivered with a truck and train.   Including discs you order.

LMAO What law?  Canada and Australia have passed laws for new technologies. Our inept congress is too busy catering to corps and big bucks. And fighting drug wars and economy wars and eroding our rights and the constitution..................

Tim I no longer have the link but there was a district court case where they determined the sync law does not apply to karaoke..

Yup, I agree - horribly inept congress. Flavor of the minute is what they take care of - we are so mired now that creating laws for something as inconsequential as karaoke probably hasn't even made the bottom of the list anywhere. I found it really interesting that baseball got a free pass to congress - I think all those creep politicians just wanted to see Roger Clemens. Seriously....

[font=Times New Roman][/font]We have a KJ in our area that says he is licensed by ASCAP, tried to look into it, but with all the legal mumbo jumbo, wasn't sure just what they were trying to get across.  Does anyone have any information about this?  I was trying to find out if you are registered with them, can you legally use a hard drive.

NO    using a hard drive is considered a format shift.    Nobody has permission to do that.  From anybody for any reason.    He's full of crap.    Even making a backup CD is considered an illegal format shift.

Not saying that we don't do it.  Just saying that some think we have a right to make a 1 to 1 copy.  Not for resale.  Just to protect our (originals) investment.
