Anybody know of a free antispy DL that doesn't at some point require a person to "Pay to register and get rid of your other 2000 intruders" ? I'm finding that even ad-aware isn't "free", at least the prog I DL'd. Recently my ISP/IP (whatever it is) provider up'd sys requirements to a minimum of 512 MB Ram.. So until I upgrade my memory, any progs work with 256 MB's that are freeware ? |

I just did a duel scan the other day. I have STOP SIGN i paid for and AVG FREE. AVG found 15 threats and SS for 6. 4 were indentical on both lists. Stop Sign found some differents ones than AVG. My non expert opionion is, you should have 25 different virus plans and run them all, all the time. ![]() |

Why do we put all of our faith in to one virus protection program? That assumes that they are perfect and have every know virus in the universe under control. Now we know that isn't happeneing. One company catches different things than another. You don't have house insurance to cover your car. And health insurance won't pay for a new roof. It makes absolutely no sense to only trust one virus protection program completely. One more thing. Will any of them pay to fix your computer if it crashes under their watch? If they are so good where's the guarantee? One more, one more thing. New viruses are created every day by some nut. How come they don't have new updates for new viruses daily? Sometimes it doesn't update for a week or more. How good can they be? In my mind i would think that you need daily updates to have full protection. |

I use Mcafee and Free AVG on different systems. They both update at least once a day. Consider. A virus has to be unleashed on the public and infect systems before an anti-virus can be written. Most software houses rely on the public sending them a virus so they can write the disinfectant. They will also look and copy what the competition has found. It is not uncommon for many of the lesser known Antivirus programs to find 100's of virus's that say Mcafee or Free AVG don’t find. In reality those viruses usually don’t exist. Some people if trying that software decide because it found so many more viruses than other programs, may be inclined to part with their money quite easily. It is nothing more than theft. Download.com and Tucows.com will both give good impartial reviews of any software you could imagine and most of it is free to download. A lot remains free. Some has a time limit. Some, other restrictions. Any Anti-virus you may consider using… Google it first and see what others have to say about it. |

Correct...but there have been viruses around since we had computers so we should be getting daily updates because of the ones from last week. AVG has over 1 million viruses on their list. Probably 20-30 added every day if not more. So they should have 20-30 updates ready for tomorrow. And the next day and the next... It's not like the virus makers took off for a 3 week vacation. ![]() |

According to my research and experience, Norton and McAfee are no longer industry leaders in detecting viruses. I used to use McAfee years ago when it was shareware, but quality fell off a cliff when the company was purchased. Same goes for Norton. They are also both TREMENDOUS resource hogs. Be sure to do a complete uninstall when/if you get rid of these. I've been very happy with AVG Free, been using it for years and they have a great reputation! The free version is for home use only. If you are looking to protect business computers, they expect you to pay. With the free package, every now and then they'll pester you to "upgrade" to a "premium" package that includes a firewall and anti-spyware. For a firewall, I use the free version of ZoneAlarm and for spyware I use the free versions of SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, and Spybot - Search and Destroy. Been very happy with the level of protection attained using these. Not had any problems! --Tad |

Good research. Years ago Dr. Solomon was King. Never been as good since McAfee Baught them out. Find Norton troublesom. Still use Mcafee. Trust Free AVG. Use Zone Alarm. Since they all diddle in each others pot... Free AVG to me is a winner. Beware the popups... They are not always... But generally the thieves. |

Kaspersky is good, however, if something keeps telling you you have 1000's of threats and you have to pay to get rid of them, you'll probably find it's too late. You probably have WinAntiSpyware or WinAntivirus or some other similar parasite that poses as an antivirus/antispyware package and ruins your system. I'd back up everything important on your system and prepare for a clean install. More than likely that will be the result. Oh, and I know this, because I'm a computer technician. Have been for over a decade. |

I added Spybot Search & Destroy, free also, updates often, runs in background now.. Refuses to allow changes to your system unless you click OK.. The top antivirus is Nod32, (Not free) and this uses system requests to determine virus activity. AVG and Spybot will clean out most infections. If it can't, format and install windows again..
