I am thinking about going around to businesses in our area and selling advertising in our song books to offset printing cost.  Maybe 4 pages (front and back) inserted throughout the book.  They could purchase the usual 1/4, 1/2 or full page ad that would run for 3 months in the books.  Not sure what to charge for each ad,  Would like some input on this idea and on pricing.

Thought about that in the past and think its a great idea
Just watch out for any thing that might compete with your venue ( other bars or restaurants)

Be wary of any TIME SENSITIVE advertising - How long will they stay in you book ?
Be wary of any improper content  ( adult  etc etc).

$25 for a half Page
$50 for a full page

enough to redo your books

Well maybe they (the other people) should pay to advertise in your book as well.  I wouldn't think that this would be a problem, especially if it was INSIDE your books.  Sounds like a great idea....Don't know how it would work though.  It's about time to redo mine, so maybe something to think about, Thanks...MrD

It certainly is a great way to defray the cost of redoing books. I would think that adding paid advertising will mean due diligence in making sure your books like TOP NOTCH all the time - may require more replacing of pages, covers, etc. But definitely an excellent idea. My front page is always reserved for a listing of where our shows are, with a short description of the place and the hours. (Menu specials, the added distractions at the place {darts, pool tables,), etc.)

To avoid the conflict of interest, maybe people can suggest types of places that may consider paid adverts - i.e., we have a place that sells used/consignment/new punk/gothic/rocker type clothing, etc. - any other ideas? Have to be place where people would go during times when they wouldn't be at karaoke shows - so that kind of limits you to daytime or offnight stuff...

I'd be interested to hear ideas from others about what types of places would consider this sort of paid advertising. I love the idea.

K

Any business would be candidates for advertising .
Hair Salons
Auto Repair
Clothes Shops
Tanning Salons

The "advertiser" would be smart to offer a small discount coupon so they can TRACK the benefit if advertising on the books.

Why not think BIGGER and get some online karaoke retailers to post in your books

Very creative idea, and one that I hadn't considered, even though I am an "expert" in print advertising ventures.  But, in fairness to me, the cost of my printing has not been significant and I'm only doing one show with a limited audience.

Thinking about a local company that does 18 shows a week, I can envision how such an idea could be very appealing.  The volume of singers could be attractive to some advertisers.  And the costs to that karaoke company for printing books for 4-5 different KJ's must be quite significant!

Be aware that before any advertiser will sign up, they must be CONVINCED that they will achieve a significant "enough" level of exposure.  If interested, they then will compare your rates to what other vehicles offer in order to consider their opportunity costs - they have a limited budget and limitless choices as to where else they can put their advertising $.

You'll be happy to learn that advertisers, generally speaking, are attracted to new opportunities and novel ideas!  Advertising sales, however, is never easy.  So weigh the effort that you're willing to exert vs the potential benefit

Please note, many advertisers want coupon advertising in order to quantify the results they have achieved.  Let such advertisers know coupons cannot be provided, but they can insert "mention this ad for....." in their copy.

As to potential advertisers...
 - Concentrate on advertisers selling big ticket items since you can justify their advertising costs with just one sale (NOTE: This is not really the best way to sell advertising but it's simple and sometimes works).

 -  Find businesses compatible with your customer's interests: Karaoke Stores or stores carrying karaoke machines, discs and related, Musical Instrument Shops,
Music Stores, Vocal Coaches,

 -  If you do a lot of weddings and the like, speak to caterers, florists, photographers, videographers, formal wear stores, etc

Be careful who you associate yourself with.  You don't want to get caught up with someone that rips people off.

Nothing political or religious.

You need to appear neutral.

Do you have the talent to design ads?   They need to be effective and a poorly designed ad will have no or negative effect and waste their time and money.  And yours.

You are making yourself a lot of work and extra printing costs.   Color ads are way more effective that black & white.   Colored ink costs a small fortune.   And a decent fast printer costs even more.

Someone else complained about nobody reading the karaoke rules in the books.   Do you think they will pay attention to ads for other than a karaoke song?

It's a good idea, i thought about doing it on my calenders.

From the KJ's point of view a GREAT idea.  Get someone else to pay for your books!!!

From the potential client putting an add in your book....probably a bad idea.  In my own experiences, I have been bombarded with all sorts of little "gimmicky" types  of advertising campaigns.  I always ask to have them prove that it works, or give me 10-20 references, and I never hear from them again.  One thing you will have to show is that you can PROVE it will benefit a potential client to put an add in your karaoke books.

Now from a karaoke singers POV...  Where are all the songs at!!!! I could care less that then local laundry mat has a dry cleaning service.  Now where is that new Hinder song!

BUt seriously as a KJ, if you can get someone to pay to re-print your books, GREAT IDEA!!!!!
