Post subject:  How to get best sound quality out of laptop karaoke

I want to run all my karaoke using karafun on my laptop.

I'm planning to use a VGA to M1 connector cable to hookup video between my laptop and projector.  I think that should work well (hopefully anyway) for the video quality.

However, I'm not sure what types of cable/equipment I should use to get the best quality sound I can get.  Any recommendations?  I have some really nice speakers already which I want to continue using and have a Rotel surround sound receiver with many audio input options.

Are there karaoke mixers that allow for better cable connections than RGA?  The one I have right now only allows for that.  Or, perhaps are there wireless microphone systems that connect directly to the laptops that give good sound quality?  They must be wireless and I need at least 2 microphones.

I have already tried connecting the headphone output jack on my laptop to the RGA input connections on my karaoke mixer and the sound quality was not the best.  Actually, maybe its not the RGA connection on my mixer that's reducing my sound quality not the headphone output on my laptop.  Don't know.

Thanks.

Tell us the equipment you are using.

I currently have:

Sony VAIO PCG-7V2L laptop which is close to 2 years old

Rotel RSX-1056 surround sound receiver

Joseph Audio 5 piece surround speakers with subwoofer.  Don't know exact model numbers.

Vocopro da2808ve digital karaoke mixer with vocal enhancers.  I've had this for years now.

2 Scotts UM-25 wireless microphones and dual channel UHF reciever.

Infocus SP7205 projector (though sound isn't routed to projector so I don't think it matters)

connecting laptop to mixer via headphones jack on laptop to RCA plugs on mixer

I'm willing to replace some equipment to get better sound quality, though I'd prefer to replace the cheaper stuff like the mixer or the microphones.  I think its the cable connections that I'm using (the laptop headphone output jack to RCA connector) that's degrading my sound qualty.

#1: get rid of the surround sound stuff and get some pro audio amplifier and speakers.  If I am reading right your amplifier and speakers are for home stereo use. While they might handle the backing audio fine they were not meant to handle "Live" Vocals.
Number two get an external sound card. I use a behringer U-control 202 and it sounds better than thourgh the phone jack.

Your speakers seem a little lacking.  They SEEM to be home-use speakers.  Ditch that, get an amp and some pro-audio speakers (or active speakers).

Thanks a lot for the ideas!  I'm going to pick up the card this weekend and will check out other speakers.

Is there a karaoke mixer that will take a fiber optic cable input instead of RCA?  I was looking at the specs for the Behringer sound card and saw that fiber was an option with it.

Doesn't look like you have any availability for balanced i/o from that mixer... therefore any cable runs will have to be short.   That puts active speakers out of the question!

I'm willing to get a new mixer - all my equipment is pretty old anyway.  Is there one that takes a fiber optic cable input?

No fiber inputs that I know of -- and at the frequencies in question, I just don't see the advantage.
